We can thank the Who's Keith Moon for the name Led Zeppelin
Both Keith Moon and John Entwistle were a bit miffed at Pete Townsend, and behind Pete's back both had played with Jimmy Page on Jeff Beck's single "Beck's Bolero" (which Jimmy had written and arranged). After the recording sessions the four joked about forming a "supergroup" together, and Keith joked that it would go over like a "lead balloon" with fans, and as the others laughed either Keith or John said, "No, not a balloon, but a lead Zeppelin!" Later, when Jimmy Page was touring with new band mates Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones as the "New Yardbirds" he was trying to think of a different name for his band, and latched on to the "Lead Zeppelin" name, which the group's manager, Peter Grant, then insisted on changing to "Led Zeppelin" so people would not miss the joke by calling them "LEED Zeppelin" -
