Best cheap AIO inkjet printers for Linux?

[b]What are the best cheap AIO inkjet printers for Linux?[/b] NOTE: I'm in the process of going from W7 to Linux Mint or eOS or ??? (The apps I will be mostly using are Inkscape, GIMP, Krita, DarkTable, Shotcut, Scribus, LibreOffice) [b]Trying to find out which is better: new ink (original or generic) or new printer?[/b] Sad thing is... it's about the same price 8( What about cheap AIO Epson Printers for Linux? I have a old HP PhotoSmart Plus From around 2010 - should work? I also have 2 Canon's Pixmas MP495 & MG2520... I like canon; but I rather have a AIO printer that works w/ Linux

Brother MFC-J470DW is an affordable AIO that works with Linux. Networks wirelessly. Retail is like $135 US, but if you shop, you should be able to find it for a little more than half that. I got one on sale for $69.

Afaik your canon printers are both working perfectly on linux

I have not tested any of the printers w/ Linux… Only researched them online.
I have some Live CD's, but they are limited.
I want to get this right the first time. I know I can't go wrong w/ hp. Some states hp's printer engine & ink are made by canon.

I'm sorry but I'm not getting it.
I understand that an user that has zero printers in house, wants to avoid to waste his money with an incompatible device, but if you already have one, just test it, and start to worry about a new model only if something goes really wrong with what you already have.
I know I can't go wrong w/ hp
HPs are usually well supported since the stone age. I remember that installing a 3300 multifunction in the early 2000s required 500MB of drivers and bloatware under windows, and just two mouse clicks under Mandrake linux.
That said personally I vastly prefer Canons and Brothers as they are better combinations of per copy cost, durability and initial costs.
Brothers are usually less refined and have lower print quality but they are incredibly robust and cheap, both on initial and manteinance costs.

Generally the OS is indifferent to a printer, even for cheaper. But the problem is not the price of the printer, but the replacement cartridges, which in most cases are worth more than the printer itself. While allowing the filling with ink, this causes some functions are no longer available, such as notice of the ink level.
For this guide is worth buying as the cost of the cartridges, even if the printer is somewhat more expensive, not to turn it into a single-use peripheral. -
I guess the only question would be whether there's a software suite supporting all AIO functions on Linux. In my Experience, Linux tends to install and use printers without fuss or bother. However, the scan, copy and fax functions are not always supported. I happen to know the printer I mentioned has a full Linux software suite. I am sure there are dozens of others.

i use the brother mfc-j870dw. i have used it mostly on mint, also on: ubuntu derivatives, and fedora. with drivers from brother website, select deb installer and execute as administrator like file is a script. terminal driver installation does the rest. i havent been able to use the printer's scanner on any linux distro. when im feeling loyal, i scan images to a sd card, usb drive and physically transfer it to the card reader on my computer. 32/64-bit issues could keep this from working. brother is far from linux-friendly. distros i used were 64-bit mint 17-18 and ubuntu 14.04-16.04. brother hasnt updated the drivers in years. thats probably why i can't get the scanner to work. ubuntu is generally best for drivers, as is sabayon.

Separate note
one good recommendable tool, among others, to acquire images from scanner is IrfanView. Although it is a program for Windows works well with Wine in Linux. Unfortunately Linux does not have any equivalent to this program -
Confused… Separate Printer & Scanner? I have a old USB Umax Scanner in the closet.
According to hplipopensource.com my old hp printer will print & scan.

It's just that without the proper software suite or drivers, Linux may or may not see the printer, the scanner, and the fax functions on your AIO machine all together. It may see one, or another, or each of them as though your one piece of hardware was three pieces of hardware. It could see Printer A, Fax B, and Scanner C, even though they are all packaged in the same piece of equipment. It may have drivers for one function, but no driver for another function. If you don't have a disc or download of the entire driver suite for linux on the given machine, you might connect it and Linux will go, "Aha! a printer!" and load the correct driver for the print function, and yet not see the scanner on the same machine. Or it might see both. You don't know what compatible drivers for your equipment came packaged in your Linux flavor, or what drivers it will find in the repo, until you try.

if i install drivers on deb system, i can connect the scanner to a windows virtual machine. i cant if im connecting to windows through a rpm operating system with proprietary drivers installed. mostly tested rpm on fedora, would i need to expand repositories? system says that drivers are installed. i thought it would at least be able to bridge usb port to virtual machine, but there is an error with device being read.
