Do we really need new imoji-thingys?
-
It seems some think we need new/more emojis.
This article from the BBC says so anyway.
Personally I think we got too many already. As a practical person I don't really see the need but I have never been properly educated in the language of emoji so maybe there is something I am missing ??? -
@greybeard , emojis are necessary, since in written messages the gestures and mimics that exist in a normal conversation are missing, which can give different or even opposite meanings to what is said. Emojis were invented to make up for this deficiency.
Now some people, however, abuse them, which somewhat denigrates a conversation.
Do you need more emojis? It may be that there are situations in which you need some other that is not on the list, already quite extensive, that forums, social networks, chats or even those that include Windows (Win +.).
Usually are enough for me. By chance, if necessary, you can create your own, for example with text (ಠ⌣ಠ) or using an editor like this. -
@greybeard Do we need formatting in text? Not really, but it can clarify when used correctly, or confuse when misused or abused.
Emojis Are Similar. They can be used for decoration, for customised menus, or to convey emotions.
They are especially helpful when the language being used is not one's mother tongue.
I think we have way too many already. Now it takes longer to find the right one, and there is no guarantee that what you see will be what you get, as the appearance of emoji is font-dependent.

@pesala , although there may be differences depending on the font used, normally the emoji, despite slight differences, does not usually change the meaning.
The use in an international forum like this is more problematic, that some emojis have a very different meaning, depending on the country. For example, this one may mean for some the OK sign, while for others it is a serious insult (assh.le) -

@catweazle Yes it seems fruits and vegetables get abused a lot in emoji lingo.
One reason I don't use them, I don't know their secondary meanings. Anything more than colon + D or semi-colon + Shft0 is probably beyond me.
In a former life I used to do some stuff on a FIGlet server but I doubt many even know what that is today. -
@greybeard , yes, there are some, such as fruits or the like that I think have more the function of using them as icons for something, for example to mark recipes in a similar way to how other symbols are used, not necessarily in a conversation, but in lists.
