Elderly Newbie feeling liberated on Vivaldi, but 3 minor issues want to solve. Help appreciated
-
70+ years old, resident in Sweden. Now retired fighting the UK government full-time to get Brexit reversed. Have suffered with almost all browsers but Vivaldi on my second day feels lke liberation.
Some issues I am experiencing:
-
If make comments and want to track responses, how can this be done?
-
Have imported bookmarks from 5 different sorces, need to reotganise them, eliminate duplicates if poss. Any ideas on how to do this?
-
Any way of quickly seeing what comments I have made?
-
-
@britur As a start:-
1 Comments/responses - on this forum use your profile settings; click on your Avatar picture (upper right of forum tab)
2 Maybe the bookmark manager helps (Ctrl-B or Menu Bookmarks/Manage Bookmarks
3 Again via your profile (click on Avatar Picture, then on your name)
-
@TbGbe Thanks v. much. Difficult part is how to set up getting all bookmarks into a file. Looking for a smart wayfor the process. Maybe have 5,000. Too many for my brain to handle.

@britur Welcome to Vivaldi, and please don't sell yourself short, we've all been "newbs" once
From your other posts I can tell you've got more spirit than a lot of the much younger users here, who tend to give up on the smallest thing they are even slightly confused by. Vivaldi is still very much under active development, and things sometimes break or don't work as well as in the major browsers with billion-dollar corporations behind them. But for me at least that's part of the charmFor your questions:
- When you make or post in a thread, you will be automatically set to watch that thread, and will receive notifications (bell icon, I'm sure you've seen) when someone else posts. You won't receive emails, which I think is for the best anyway.
One big tip though: From the top Categories page, go through all the categories and set them to "Not Watching" or "Ignored" at the bottom. I'd recommend to set the whole Local Forum category to Ignored unless there's one language you're interested in. If there's a category you don't really care about, set Ignored, otherwise use Not Watching.
This will avoid you having a constant "99+" red mark on your Unread tab, it will only show unread from threads you are watching, and Recent will only show new from the categories you're not ignoring. I have no idea why this is not the default (or maybe it is now...)
- I think the standard Bookmarks manager is fine, at least for my use, but you might want to have a look at some extensions for finding duplicates, sorting, finding dead links and so on. Best is to just search the Chrome extension store and try some: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/bookmarks+duplicate
5000 bookmarks is a lot, but as a heavy bookmark user myself I understand the need for them. I'd start by organising into logical sub-categories (and sub-sub...) and then go from there. A lot of work but not very demanding brains-wise, so it's something to do while listening to music
- This was answered above, but you click on the profile link or just on your own name from a post to get you to the profile where all your previous posts are listed.
retired fighting the UK government full-time to get Brexit reversed
You got me at 70+, retired and still fighting

@Pathduck Really appreciate your very generous response. So v. helpful and saves me hours and hours, without I hope taking up too many of yours. Vivaldi is truly fantastic, all those years I've struggled with the others. What a waste.
I have a great slogan - I think - for Vivaldi, and that is if I am successful with my efforts amongst other persons to put an end to the UK govts DUMB decision on BREXIT, it will be almost totally because of Vivaldi. I was getting so tired and depressed at the thought of having to use any of the others
It's given me a new lease of life, feel truly liberated. And people on the site are so helpful in sharing their knowledge. A real community. Whatever happens I'm just a total newbie but we should maybe try and make sure that we support Vivaldi so they don't go the way of all the others. Do we have any threads on what users could do to safeguard this? A strategic campaign of some kind?
Thanks Pathduck - what a name! How come? My fighting web site has an even stranger name!
-
@britur Happy to help in any way I can
I have a great slogan - I think - for Vivaldi
What is the slogan? My personal one is "Keep Calm and Love Vivaldi"
https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/329819Do we have any threads on what users could do to safeguard this? A strategic campaign of some kind?
Best we can do is try to spread the word in whatever way we can. If you have people for instance on other forums and social media, tell them about Vivaldi and try to help them get started using it, it would help a lot
what a name! How come?
Very simple, it's my name very literally translated to English, by a 10 year old me... It doesn't really make any sense other than that
-
@Gwen-Dragon Maybe I'm the very oldest? Don't mind if true! % wise what do you think the age distribution of Vivaldi users actually is?
-
@Pathduck Don't really get that, from which language if not too intrusive a question.
Why not a competition to be decided by a vote for the best slogan. I may have one that will keep growing if things carry on like this! -
@Gwen-Dragon Shit, so I didn't actually need to state what I thought everybody would know anyhow!
-
@Gwen-Dragon What is the age of a silver surfer? Like the spelling checker!

Norwegian. My name is "Stian" so Sti = Path, An(d) = Duck....
Yeah me and my friends were 10 years old or something when we came up with it, but at least it's... unique :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes: -

@britur In Germany such Silver Surfer may have about 60+ yrs.
First...welcome to the forums. The more you use V the more Vivaldi will become easier to use. BTW, what is your slogan.
@Gwen-Dragon I'm 65 yrs. old. I don't have any hair left to go silver. What do you call me? I know...don't ask questions you don't want answers to. Or..."Be careful what you ask for. You might get it".
-
@Gwen-Dragon I know. I was trying to be my normal "smart ass".
-
Finally someone older than me here.
Welcome to the Forums. Hope you got the info you need.
If you have more questions, don't hesitate to post them. -
@Gwen-Dragon Silver is 60+, is there gold and platium too? Or does it end at silver? People tend to live somewhat longer nowadays!
-

First welcome to our community, by another Silver Surfer 60+.Certainly at the beginning I was also somewhat overwhelmed by the possibilities offered by Vivaldi already in its first version, catching calluses on the finger scrolling through the configuration.
Even today I still find new things in this browser.
But yes, this is an extraordinary community very willing to help if there is a problem or doubt, not only this, it also has an open ear for suggestions of new features.
I hope therefore that you enjoy this community as much as with this browser. -
