Re-install

  • For whatever reason if we are to re-install Vivaldi, what is the best way to retain our settings and search engines ?

Just don't delete them. A re-install will preserve all settings and data. Seldom, it may actually fix something as well.

On the other hand, 99% of the time when something breaks, it's not in the application folder, but in the user data folder. To fix that, one usually re-names the "default" folder without deleting it (thus preserving the data) and lets the browser build a spiffy clean new one on re-start. If that fixes the problem, the user can then move vital data from the old, re-named folder to the new one, and pick up where they left off.

If you're going to reinstall your OS, then save that "default" folder to external storage. That will preserve everything (with the possible exception of passwords and extensions).

  • actually it was a trick question as I couldnt wait for sync :)

I was wondering if copying the default folder to another machine would copy over the complete settings and SEs (I know I know I will experiment :)

  • Just out of curiosity: why does V recommend 'default' rather than User Data as mentioned in http://boxysystems.com/index.php/copy-chrome-browser-settings-from-machine-x-to-machine-y/ ?

Probably just because the User Data folder overall is MUCH less likely to be a source of problems than just the Default folder. And there is nothing to speak of relating to the user experience which is in the big folder. It doesn't impact you browsing in any way that you would notice unless you are personally tweaking your own blacklists, etc. from time to time.

Because i am incorrigibly an irritatingly pedantic details-woman, i'm compelled to point out this thread appears in the "All platforms" stream, & as such, reference to "User Data" is only narrowly* applicable [to Windows]. Never having been knowingly within 5 paces of a Steve Jobs machine i can't comment on that, but for Linux, as that link states, it's /home/your_user_id/.config/google-chrome/Default, or, for immediate Vivaldi relevance; /home/steffie/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/

    • ok, not "narrowly", given comparative platform market penetrations, but nonetheless not universal.

I did not know that. I never looked it up on Linux!
