Vivaldi focuses shield icon in address bar on startup

@Pathduck said in Focus address bar on startup:
There is a long-standing issue in Vivaldi, that on first start-up it will focus the Start Page/web page instead of the url field, no matter the "Focus Page Content" setting. On subsequent tab/window opens, focus is correctly placed. If new tabs/windows are opened from the task bar context menu, the focus issue is also present. However, this does not sound like your issue.
The ONLY way I can think of to focus the shield on startup is if "Focus All Controls" are enabled in Keyboard settings AND Shift+Tab is pressed twice.
Argh... I'm having exactly the same issue. Everything works perfectly for new tab / new window (focus in in the addressbar) BUT NOT when starting vivaldi - there is no focus so I manually have to type CMD+L to focus it, highly annoying...
I have "Start page" as startup (only available option) and "Focus page content" DISABLED

@wojtek Hi, you chose a strange old post to quote. The OP for this topic never returned and their issue was very different.
I posted a year later a possible solution for someone else who dug this topic up:

It fit exactly my issue

https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/772125Hmm... I saw that but somehow missed / didn't work for me. With a fresh mind today and indeed switching "start with" from "last session" (sensible) to "Homepage" makes vivaldi focus on address bar.
However it's only a workaround and quite buggy I'd say:
- having "last session" makes more sense in most cases (we want to restore it still
- switching it to "homepage" works (addressbar is focused afterstartup) but it doesn't work if we use set it to "start page" (which is the default for "homepage" xD) so there is definitelly something odd going on there.
IMHO it's a bug and if the browser opens with a window where the tab is empty/start page it should focus on the addressbar... plain and simple...

@wojtek
Hi, it does, open Vivaldi from the task bar, desktop shortcut or open a new window from the menu or Ctrl+N.
Last session is enabled.
I never saw it focused on the shield icon.
Please check this in a Guest Profile or better in a new Profile.
If you can reproduce it there then it is maybe a bug. -

Setting it "Last Session" works for me, the browser starts with the address field focused.
UNLESS of course your last session ended on an actual web page and not the Start Page - then it focuses the web page - as it should. This is not a bug and working as it should.
You should also note that in Settings > Tabs > Tab Handling the "Focus page content on new tab" setting says "new tab".
This setting only applies to new tabs - it does not apply to opening the browser, unless the browser actually starts with a new tab i.e. the Start Page. Makes sense? -
@Pathduck you said "No it does not. It only happens when launching a new Window from the taskbar context menu when the browser is already running."
I have my browser set to default to the address bar. When I open a new window from the taskbar context menu (or click the vivaldi shortcut on my taskbar if vivaldi is running on a separate monitor), the focus is on the first speed dial item.
This is a bug, right?

Yes, a known and confirmed bug.
