Disabling "Show Mailing Lists" does not work for newly received mails

So I created a few Mailing lists by that handy feature "Treat sender as mailing list". (This is really nice for automatically generated emails from various sources.) Then, in my Unread folder I disabled "Show Mailing Lists", to hide these automatic emails.
This cleans up the clutter nicely - I can see it as a properly controlled way to create a Focused inbox, similarly to Outlook, but without surprises. Great!
Problem is that when the next such email arrives, it shows up again in my Unread folder, regardless the state of "Show Mailing Lists".
Mails received prior to creating the Mailing list do toggle visibility correctly, but not the new ones.
Also if I "Rerun filter for Folder" on Unread, I think all such email ceases to toggle correctly
