Suddenly adding bookmarks from icon stopped working
-
Starting yesterday adding a bookmark by clicking on the bookmark icon no longer works. I have it configured so that clicking on the bookmark icon brings up the add bookmark dialog. When the problem started the dialog comes up empty: no url, no name, nothing.
I tried it on another profile and it works fine, so it is limited to my main profile.
I deactivated all extensions but it didn't help.
I tried to reset the booksmarks settings but it didn't help.
Any idea how to fix it without removing Vivaldi and starting from scratch?

Hi, I never heard this one but some user report the bookmark UI does not update properly.
This happen on the bookmark bar, panel.
Can you reproduce this after a Vivaldi restart?Cheers, mib

Yes, it continues after a restart. Actually, after each change I made (deactivate all extensions, reset bookmark settings, etc.) I restarted the browser.

Did you upgrade to the latest version of Vivaldi yesterday when this problem first appeared?

Stable 5.7.2921.65 on Debian Sid, no extensions installed, I'm unable to replicate. Works for me as expected.

@Tetsuosumo Yes, this started after the upgrade. Here is my version info:
Vivaldi: 5.7.2921.65 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Revision: 7dba05d7fcf6f361b9243b11c60685f954ff3b1a

Hm, I am still think an extension cause this after the update, they lurking in the background and can do really strange things in Vivaldi.
If you use a lot remove 50%, restart Vivaldi and test, then the next 50% and so forth.
If you use sync it is not that hard to start from scratch,
the hard way:Cheers, mib

@the1avi I am using the exact setup as you are and cannot reproduce this problem. Are you by any chance running linux in a vm? What linux distro are you on? Is it debian based?

Well, things went south really fast and this is the 2nd time it happened to me. I rebooted my machine (Ubuntu 22.04) after a kernel update. I closed all applications before I rebooted. When I brought up Vivaldi all my profiles disappeared. Looking at ~/.config I found that vivaldi is linked to /run/user/1001/avi-vivaldi. Strange. I removed the link and copied vivaldi-back-ovfs to vivaldi and my profiles came back but some bookmarks that were added shortly before the reboot disappeared. I don't know who is responsible for pointing vivaldi to /run/user/... It's probably an Ubuntu specific settings because my other computer running pop-os doesn't use a link.
I also noticed that chrome and chromium also point to /run/user/1001/avi-* but Brave doesn't nor does Microsoft Edge beta.
After all of this I am still having a problem adding the bookmarks from the icon. Interestingly enough, my pop-os computer doesn't have all these problems even though it is synced to my Ubuntu laptop and all the extensions are the same.
At this point I am hesitant to continue using Vivaldi because it seems to be pretty fragile and how many times am I going to rebuild my main profile?
