Verify that I'm the owner of my Vivaldi Blog
-
I'd like for the link to my Vivaldi Blog (mikolsic.vivaldi.net) to have a green checkmark on my Vivaldi Social profile. I know Mastodon provides a rel="me" HTML link for that purpose, but I don't know where to put that into my blog, or if it's even possible to do that with the Vivaldi Blog.
Anybody know how to do this?
-
@mikolsic Hi - Vivaldi's WP install is a lot more limited than a self-hosted WP, so what you can do is kind of basic. On a self-hosted WP you could for instance edit your PHP header directly adding the required code the to <head> element.
It's too bad the "Social Links" block does not add the proper code for Mastodon verification. Maybe the team can make some changes to that, what say you @jane-n ?
Basically what you'll need to do is add a link like this:
<a rel="me" href="https://social.vivaldi.net/@mikolsic" title="Mastodon">Mastodon</a>
The important part is therel="me"
part.For instance you could add a "About" page with the correct code, then link to that page from Mastodon.
Or you could try using a "Custom HTML" widget for adding the code.
Another option would be using the Menu editor and add come custom links.

@mikolsic I did some more investigation. Apparently, the Vivaldi blogs have the ActivityPub plugin added, and I think this already solves the problem.
It adds the following to the blog head element:
<link rel="me" href="https://social.vivaldi.net/@mikolsic" />
So basically, that should work out of the box. I'm not sure why it won't verify for you, but note that sometimes it might take some time. Make sure you've added the full URL correctly including the protocol:
https://mikolsic.vivaldi.net
I just tested adding this to Mastodon:
https://pathduck.vivaldi.net
And it almost instantly verified:
-
I see the ActivityPub addon in my dashboard, but when I click there I don't see an obvious place where I'd be putting the reference to my Vivaldi Social profile. (Sorry, I'm fairly ignorant about coding.) Can you point me in the right direction?
-
@Pathduck In a case of interesting timing, I actually added the automatic
<link rel="me">
for all blogs on vivaldi.net just a few hours ago today.@mikolsic If you go to your Vivaldi Social profile and save changes (even if there are no changes to save), you should probably see the verified check appear.
-
That did it! Fortuitous timing Thank you!
-
@thomasp Now that's a real LOL moment
I just thought about having a quick look at the blog source and lo and behold, there it was - so I figured it was something added by the ActivityPub plugin
Very clever integration
-
@thomasp I still have a generic page up for my blog, but after adding and saving its URL to my Vivaldi Social profile, I'm not seeing the checkmark.
I post using my other account (which has a checkmark), so this account has zero posts. I don't know if this is why.
-
@edwardp Try making a post in WP maybe?
What's your "other account"?
Viewed the HTML source and <link rel="me"> isn't under <head>.
Yes. But why launch Chromium. You can view source in Vivaldi
-
@Pathduck I just found CTRL-U in Vivaldi.
(I edited this message a few times.)
Other account is in sig.
To be honest, I'm not familiar with WordPress. I'd like to see a WYSIWYG editor, but I guess WP doesn't offer that, otherwise I'd manually add it in.
-
@Pathduck It looks like I lost the generic Hello World page.
-
@edwardp You know when asking for help, it's considered common courtesy to actually provide links to what's being asked about. Saves everyone elses time spent searching up your sites/accounts.
It seems your "other" account at:
https://epp.vivaldi.net
Does have the Mastodon verify link, while this one does not:
https://edwardp.vivaldi.netWhy I don't know. I guess wait for Thomas to reply.

Settings > Writing > Use Classic Editor.
Everyone hates the block editorI gave some suggestions earlier that can be used (About page, Custom HTML etc)
-
@Pathduck My apologies, assumed it was obvious, as I placed it in the sig.
Re the block editor, I can see why.
I'm trying to find the Classic editor. It's supposed to be under Plugins and I'm not even finding that.

Things are rarely as obvious as you think they are. Provide links, save time for everyone

I told you above where to find it. Why would you look in Plugins?

I also had a search page up that said it was in Plugins.
I found it now, thank you. With the Classic editor, it's not letting me add that text in, so I will wait for @thomasp to respond. But the original, default Hello World page is gone, I can't recover it.
EDIT: I have a basic Hello World page up now, but still no checkmark on Vivaldi Social.

I also attempted to add the HTML code via a widget, that didn't save it at all and neither did Custom HTML.
-
@edwardp Yeah, widgets are fiddly, especially since the Vivaldi WP install does not have the classic widgets plugin. And the block widget editing is very confusing, even to experienced users.
And WP does have a learning curve - I suggest starting here:
https://learn.wordpress.org
https://wordpress.org/documentation/The big challenge for new WP users is understanding the difference between posts, pages, categories, widgets, and getting to grips with the editor(s). Hosting your own WP install is preferred as you get total control of themes, plugins and all options. Vivaldi's WP install is very limited and some of the themes are kind of buggy.
I added a Custom HTML widget to my Vivaldi blog, with the code:
<h3 class="widget-title">Links</h3> <p>๐ <a rel="me" href="https://social.vivaldi.net/@Pathduck">Mastodon</a></p>
Remember to hit the Update button otherwise your changes won't be saved.
Like I said earlier, you can add an About page for instance, and link that on your Mastodon profile, like:
https://pathduck.vivaldi.net/about/ -
@Pathduck Thanks for finding the links for me.
@edwardp https://edwardp.vivaldi.net is using a legacy theme that we don't support anymore. If you change it to either the Classic, Magazine, or Simple theme then you will get our customizations. Note that you will not be able to change back to the Venice theme afterwards though.
