Frequently requested fixes – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2883.3

@operanix: Which version of Windows are you running?
-
@other
we encountered that on the older W7 machines.
Let me check the specific version.Vivaldi 5.7.2883.3 (Official Build) 32-Bit
OS Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)

@mib2berlin i know.
that is why i reverted the whole virtual machine to a previous snapshot. not only the browser. -

Wow so many snapshots in the past few weeks -
Hi,
Why when you load a background tab with middle click, if the server takes some time, the tabs show an "empty" title. Why not show first (while is loading) a title with for eg the URL?
-
@Cjcr
Hi, it does the same for foreground tabs, you need to load the source of the page before you get the page title.
It depends on the page, your imgur ling shows the page title in 2/10 of a second on a background tab.Cheers, mib

Since the previous snapshot, every time that I restart Vivaldi, the panel is set extra wide - almost double my preference of the minimum open width.
-
@mib2berlin is just a cosmetic thing, but showing a temporal title with the URL while is loading the web is a good thing. Even if is just one or two seconds, is useful see something.
Opera does something like this: first show a "Loading..." in the tab while the webview is loading, then when the url site is loading shows the URL and when the <title></> is available, then puts that as name of the tab.
Vivaldi just shows the <title> when the site is loaded totally.

[macOS][Menus][Tabs] Tab stacks are not listed in the global window menu (VB-92517)
Nice, I'm glad to see this finally fixed for macOS. Though there still seems to be a very minor problem:
The tab stack is not immediately shown in the window menu after creating it; you must first switch tabs, and only then will the window menu update itself to list the tab stack.
EDIT: Reported as VB-93827 - Tab stacks are not immediately listed in the window menu after creation (I am once again assuming that this is a macOS only problem).

Is there any more detail on "Sudden memory hogging, freeze and crash (VB-91443)," such as conditions under which it happens and which build it started with? I haven't seen it with yesterday's (on Windows), at least.

So far the CSS-issue with some elements losing their font-style seems to be fixed. Was a funny bug though, and it also fit sometimes.
Hoped auto-complete's further fix was addressing the weird behaviour of it preferring longer bookmark-nicknames. For day to day it's really annoying, when you type the short ones correctly, hit enter but then it transports you to another, because auto-complete suggests another. Sometimes trying to find what it's sorting by to work around it. (e.g. "ff" => "ff14mb", although "ff14" exists; remove "ff14mb" and it suggests "ff14c")

@operanix: Thanks, will look into it.

@rseiler
Hi, VB-91443 is marked as resolved, the oldest report was from August.
Random circumstances, as far as I know the fix is not included in this snapshot.Cheers, mib

In that snapshot the browser window appears to be bigger then the screen.
Looks like developers have tradition to make fresh annoying bugs in every snapshot.
Even not taking glitch with maximized window size into account, borders still have problems:
Top left corner have only shadow. Round shadow below square edge.
Bottom right corner have in addition blue border 1 pixel in size.

The previous snapshot (or perhaps the one just before it) had the address bar autocomplete perfect for my use. Now it's back to the old behavior I was hoping to lose.
The problem is with bookmark shortcuts. I have a bookmark with the shortcut "aa". I have another with the shortcut "aap". When I type "aa" in the address bar, I expect the "aa" bookmark to be targeted when I hit Enter. But instead, the "aap" bookmark is activated.
The autocomplete is too greedy, and it is nonsensical. If autocomplete has a conflicting claim on what the user has typed into the address bar, preference should always go to the shorter exact match. If the user wants otherwise, he will type until either he achieves a unique leader, or as the field of suggestions narrows down he will select the desired target with the down arrow or the mouse.

[Sync][Bookmarks] Synchronize custom bookmark thumbnail metadata (VB-93139)
What do you guys mean with "thumbnail metadata", does this mean that thumbnails will finally be synced as well?
-
I'm SO very glad for this snapshot forum for many reasons with the main one at least for me is being able to communicate not only with other snapshot users but also with members of the vivaldi development team as well as team members both to share ideas as well as share comments about items that are still not functioning as expected.

No. sync of thumsnails do not work. As i was told in the past, the data size of many thumbnails would cost too much traffic and storage on Sync servers.

The drop-down list containing the visited websites has returned to the address bar. I thought it would remain as it is in Chrome, i.e. it would be missing, but fortunately this useful feature has returned.
Any idea what caused this feature to disappear for a few snapshot releases? I know that Vivaldi differs from Chrome in many ways, but it is still based on it. -

Frankly, I now find this hard to believe, seeing how the Vivaldi Team is now hosting their Mastodon server Vivaldi Social.
I'm not sure how large the thumbnails of other people are, but Vivaldi Social allows uploading videos that will surely be much larger than any single user profile with bookmarks that all have their own thumbnail.
Let's say that a single user has ~200 bookmarks, with only around half of those having a custom thumbnail that is on average ~50KB large, that would a total of ~5MB would be needed to sync and store the custom thumbnails. And these thumbnails will not have to constantly be reuploaded and redownloaded so often, only when a user sets sync on a new device, or updates one of their thumbnails.
Now let's consider Vivaldi Social, which allows uploading media that can be as large as 15MB, here's an example of that: https://social.vivaldi.net/@VaderMcFly/109527972721101000
Note, this is bigger than the 8MB size limit imposed on themes uploaded to Vivaldi Themes.
Let's also consider that many people, let's say around 20% of Vivaldi Social users (so about 3.4K of the current 17K active users), will constantly be uploading media that is ~30KB in size every two days. That means it would need around ~50MB to support all that uploaded media (plus the occasional 15MB sized files that may be uploaded).
That really makes me wonder how the Vivaldi Team is justifying the costs of traffic and storage of media files in the Vivaldi Social servers as acceptable, but not a hypothetical syncing of thumbnails for sync servers.
