How to send a direct message in Vivaldi Social?
-
The interface has a Direct Message option on the right, which shows me DMs I've sent from other clients, but even with that selected and a specific user address beginning the post, Vivaldi seems to send it as a normal post. It does not appear in the DM timeline.
What am I missing? (Yes I'm new to this...)

@LorenAmelang Click on the member's name, click on the three-dot menu at the top right that results, select direct message.

Thank you @Ayespy! That puts the post in the DM timeline. But it also puts it in my home timeline... Does that always happen, or does it depend on some version of the recipient's ID being included in the text?

@LorenAmelang I don't really know. I never used Twitter or similar, and am totally new to Mastodon. So I am "the visually impaired leading the blind." Sorry I can't be more helpful.

@LorenAmelang
You can also set the "globe" to @ in the writing window. -
@ingolftopf Thanks for the next clue!

In twitter when you send someone a direct message, it shows up in a completely different interface. When you send someone a Direct message in the Fediverse, there is a visual indication that it is private but it shows up in your feed. The only difference between the two is that the “audience” is set to one or more users. You get to this interface by clicking the Globe icon and you have a handful of options by default.
So you compose it like any other post, you see it in your timeline like any other post, the only difference is who else you let see it - with the globe options.

Yeah. Mastodon does not have DMs like on Twitter. They have private posts. You create a regular post but restrict it to some individuals. They have made it confusing by having a section named Direct Messages which filters out your feed to show such messages.
These messages appear in your feed. They appear in search result for you. They have @ label along with the timestamp to show that they are private. It takes a while to get used to if you are coming from Twitter.
Do remember, since these private posts are open to all users who are mentioned by their handle... If you accidentally link another user in your chats with their masto id, they would get access to that post.
