What ad and tracker lists does vivaldi use
-
I am curious what lists Vivaldi is using. I also want to ask if there is any plan to allow the user to choose lists he wants or add rules. Thanks
-
@krv1 Hi, please read:
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/privacy/tracking-and-ad-blocking/Specifically, the section titled "Blocking Sources"
-
@Pathduck Thank you. That was what I was looking for.
I am also curious about who filters user requests. How is privacy preserved during the filtering process. All pages I view must pass through a filter to check against lists. Who runs that filter and is there a mechanism in place to preserve privacy of the user?

@krv1 That's not how block lists work - They are a set of rules telling the browser what requests to block before they are sent to the web server.
Requests to blocked sites never leave the browser.
Block lists are just text files. Here's Easylist:

What goes in the lists is decided by the list maintainers - it's a community open-source effort. -
@Pathduck Aha! Well, I guess I'm done then. On to enjoying browsing without Ublock origin. I don't trust those extensions with unlimited permissions. Thanks.
-
@krv1 No worries
uBlock Origin is great and I use it myself to have more control, and especially for troubleshooting issues with blockers breaking sites. But the Vivaldi Ad/Tracker-blocker works fine for most cases - it's meant more for casual browser users.
-
@Pathduck Yes it works well but I just got tired of all the fiddling around and trying to guess what does what, enabling this and disabling that. I just want something that works without breaking sites. I also don't trust extensions after having read about several popular ones that were quietly sold and then turned malicious. So I try to keep my extensions as low as possible.

It generally works really well - but no guarantees it won't break some sites from time to time. Remember the lists are not maintained by Vivaldi, sometimes the maintainers make mistakes and break a site. But then you can just disable blocking for the site until it's fixed - usually the lists are updated almost daily.
So I try to keep my extensions as low as possible.
Yes - that's always a good idea
