Vivaldi imports 96 messages from Operamail
-
@hdhondt For now, wait a little bit. The import code is being worked on.
-
-
@Ayespy Thanks, I can wait.
-
@hdhondt I guess we never got a glimpse into the activity logs that pop up while you are importing (or failing to import). @gmg asked here above about that. It is hidden behind the Mail Status button at the bottom of the Vivaldi window. Tell me what you see there as the import is running and then stopping.

Here it is:

Apart from the fact that it says it couldn't read accounts.ini there does not seem to be much wrong - apart from the number 96. If it can't read accounts.ini, how come it can see my account? But not the 2nd account?
In Australia in the 1970s "Number 96" was a notorious TV program. The number (96) was chosen for the obvious reason.
-
@hdhondt Are there any other accounts (RSS, IRC, Usenet) in the file? When IRC accounts are encountered, the import is stopped.
-
This post is deleted! -
@jumpsq
Operamail is set up for only 2 accounts, both POP/SMTP.I have only ever used POP email (no IMAP, etc). I have never used RSS, IRC, etc, and there is no mention of them in accounts.ini
-
@hdhondt - strange indeed that it finds any accounts after failing to read accounts.ini. it says "...for Opera Mail path:" and then the path is empty. So it can not have found the file. What path is displayed in the dialog? You do select the custom folder C:\Mail - is that not what gets displayed in the dialog before you start the import?
-
@ltgorm The import dialogue gives the Profile path correctly:
C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Opera Mail\Opera Mail
In that directory it should find operaprefs.ini which las the entry
[Mail]
Mail Root Directory=D:\Mail
Mail Database Consistency Check Time=1657273994The activity log also says:
Importing messages from C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\mailThere is NO Mail folder at that location, and there are NO .mbs files anywhere under the Opera Mail folder, so where does it find the 96 messages?
-
OK, that explains partially what the problem is. I was not aware of this "Mail Root Directory" setting in the operaprefs.ini and we are not using that. Hence we are looking for the messages in the Profile Path. Selecting the default installation folder and then expecting it to read the Mail Root Diretory from the operaprefs.ini is not going to work the way the logic is implemented. But I am still blank on how it manages to find 96 messages.
So "Mail Root Directory" is a root for the message files? Here I was thinking all the time that you had a custom install of Opera in D:\Mail and hence I was surprised at the folder structure there.
So we need to get our act together on this. -
@ltgorm Yes, "Mail Root Directory" (d:\mail) is the root of my entire message system. Years ago, when I set up this PC, I realised that, with a 110GB SSD drive, I would rather keep nothing but programs on there, and keep everything else on a 1TB HDD. Documents, downloads, etc were easy to change.
Then I found somewhere that the mail storage folder could be changed by adding that line in operaprefs.ini and it obviously worked.
A quick Ducky search found it here:
https://forums.opera.com/topic/4488/opera-mail-external-client-how-to-change-mail-storage-folder/2 -
I suppose I could try copying the entire mail directory to C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\mail
There is an accounts.ini in there, which lists only my main account, but it does not have any entry for d:, so how would it find my messages.
If I do that, remember I don't mind losing the other account for now. I can always set it up again and, as it is a gmail account, all the messages are still there. And I don't even mind losing those messages, they're not important. However, none of that is true with my main account, those messages exist only on my PC (and 2 backups).
So what are my chances of success if I do that?
-
@hdhondt I think that is your best chance of getting those messages in. Just make sure to have backups. I don't want you to loose your messages. Make sure to have the folder in C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\mail have the "accountX" name that fits the accounts.ini entry. But you know all that stuff by now
-
Thanks, @ltgorm. I should have time next week to try this. I'll let you know the results.
-
No luck I'm afraid, It does not even try to import any messages. Here's the list of folders in C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\mail
The mail folder has 3 subfolders: account1, account2 and drafts. I noted that my D:\mail has those 3 folders in a "Store" subfolder, so I tried again with the subfolders there - with exactly the same result, the import finishes immediately, with no errors, and no messages imported. -
I seem to have gotten this wrong. Sorry about that. My opera12 setup has a "mail" in the profile root folder. That "mail" folder contains the accounts.ini file and the "store" folder. The "store" folder then contains the account-folders (account1, account2, etc according to entries in accounts.ini).
Now we also have ability to import files to a specified destination folder but that might not help you if you want to get them into the folders that they were in in Opera.
We are also working on ability to import entire maildir folders. But this is still in the pipes. -
@ltgorm We have been talking at cross purposes. We've confused appdata\local with appdata\roaming
The import worked after putting the mail store in
C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Opera Mail\mail\storeMy opera directory structure is quite a mess. Under local I have "Opera Mail"; under roaming I have "Opera Mail \Opera Mail" as well as "Operamail".
I don't know why or how that happened. And all those folders seem to have been accessed recently.
And I now also realise the trouble it will be to get my messages into their mail folders. As you mentioned that you're working on that, I may hold off until then.
In the meantime, thanks heaps for all your help!
