I install Vivaldi Snapshot - 5.4.2741.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit) on Fedora 36. I noticed that a new Snapshot version - 5.4.2751.3 is released, but I still don't get any update.

According to the official help page, Vivaldi on Linux should get updated automatically with the rest of the OS components.

Therefore, I checked my dnf repositories list with:

      sudo dnf repolist

But I can't see any Vivaldi related repo at all, as shown in the screenshot below:

      Screenshot from 2022-07-30 23-53-23.png

This could be the reason why I still don't get any update.

Please fix this ASAP Vivaldi team. I can't use a browser that's waiting to be a security hole in my system due to not being able to auto updating/patching itself.

      Thanks.

@archerallstars You may wish to update manually. Officially released rpm package.Linux users always have a way. isn't it?

Yes, I can update manually (I already did). However, I should not have to do this myself. This is a security hole, unless I check at Vivaldi Blog every day.

No, thanks. I would rather stick with Google Chrome to eliminate my human error.

The assertion that "This is a security hole" may be a bit heavy. It should be said that there may be potential security issues if and only if it is confirmed that the previous version has known security vulnerabilities. After all, confirmed security vulnerabilities are usually the first to be patched and not waited until the next version is released, unless it is just in time for the new version to be released. So, in terms of "security holes" alone, a new version that imports new features may be less secure than the previous version because of the addition of new code that may have security implications.
            This is only My opinion

@archerallstars I suspect you have a local system, &/or methodology, problem, but not a generic Vivaldi problem... fwiw:

                @Aaron

No one knows whether the current version will have security vulnerabilities, until it's spotted and fix in a new version. That's in the future.

And it's almost impossible that a new version will contain security vulnerabilities that were previously patched. If it's a new "bug", then yes. Otherwise, we would have using Vivaldi 4 in the fear that Vivaldi 5 might contain security vulnerabilities that are not presented in Vivaldi 4.

However, all of this would be beside the point. The point is that, the update should be presented to the users when it's available. The decision to update is another matter entirely.

That's exactly how it does work for me, in all three current F VMs, & in the other 2 or 3 i recently deleted. It always works fine.

I don't know. I download and use the RPM installer from this official page, with sudo dnf install ./vivaldi-snapshot-5.4.2751.3-1.x86_64.rpm in my download location. And there's no Vivaldi repo add into my system. It's just as simple as that.

If my system is the issue, there should not have other repositories showing up too, for instance, Google Chrome repository is showing up, but not Vivaldi.

Somehow, there's some packaging issue going on here. I don't know. It's not a rocket science to install a binary package anyway.

I set up those VMs some time back, thus certainly did not use your link to the current Snappie blog page. However, as you saw from my earlier post, 2 of my current F VMs only have Stable not Snappie. So, now, i am going to install Snappie into one of them, via the rpm i shall d/l from your linked V page, then i shall update this post to let you know what ensued.

                              Notes:

                              1. Though for non-V packages i install & do system updates in terminal with dnf, specifically for V i get lazy & instead simply right-click the downloaded rpm file/s then click Open with Software Install, ie the Software GUI app. That's how i did it here too this time.

                              2. Before doing the above, this VM was overdue for a system update, so i did that [>200 pkgs] first. Being impatient, i foolishly then manually installed Snappie as above, then immediately checked the repo list. V Snappie was not in the list. I then rebooted [which ofc i should have done before, sigh], & rechecked the list, & Snappie is now present, per my codebox above.

@guigirl said in Vivaldi Snapshot doesn't get auto update:

V Snappie was not in the list. I then rebooted

Judging by the way Fedora does the updates (aka like Windoze "please don't turn off your PC" 🤢 ) this sounds like the proper solution 😁

Don't get too exciting, ladies. I re-installed and restarted many times before I came here. There's no Vivaldi repository to be found on my system, whether I install with sudo dnf install or the GNOME Software.

                                        Well...

For the additional info, I tested further to make sure this issue is not on my system. I tried installing Opera just now with the official RPM package the exact same way that I installed Vivaldi, and I have Opera on my repolist without any issue.

On Fedora, you can easily check whether you accidentally disabled any repository. For example, you can check whether you had disabled Vivaldi's repository by:

                                            sudo dnf config-manager --set-enabled vivaldi

                                            or

                                            sudo dnf config-manager --set-enabled vivaldi-snapshot

If you had disabled Vivaldi's repository before, you should get no return from the command. But you will definitely see Vivaldi in your repositories list when you run sudo dnf repolist.

But if you run sudo dnf config-manager --set-enabled vivaldi and it returns:

Error: No matching repo to modify: vivaldi.

It means that this repository NEVER EXIST in your system, which is the return that I am getting, as shown in my screenshot below:

You can see more about adding or removing software repositories in Fedora.
