Creating Note Folder

@janrif
Oh, sorry for german UI. -
@DoctorG No problem w German UI & thanks for response. So I see/saw that folder icon b4 posting but it didn't look like the one in folder pane & it wasn't in left corner (it is in the right corner) and the next problem in this regard is when clicking folder icon, Vivaldi creates folder as illustrated below but after <ENTER> it appears no where or it goes somewhere where I can't see it bc it is nested in one of the other folders. Very confusing for this old guy.
And then there is an alternate way to create a new folder "right-click in the page and select New Folder from the context menu" and I don't know what that means. <sigh>
-
@janrif well you don't press enter once you name the folder, you just click outside the edit field... I hope this helps:
-
@WildEnte Thanks very much for the video. So, if I understand, creating a note is (first) a sub-note (child folder in Tree) & then has to be d.d to the parent level?
-
@janrif I'm confused now. You asked about creating folders, so I showed how to make folders and move notes into them (moving them out works the same way). This is very similar to any file manager, if you think of notes as files that you move between folders with drag and drop.

@WildEnte I guess I'm not explaining my problem well. Lemme see.....
I click on folder icon top right in notes panel. I get this
So I do (or don't) change the name to something other than "New Folder". Then what? I've not been able to see where "New Folder" has been created in the tree usually b/c it is nested in one of the current folders in my note mgr. Maybe it's where I place my focus b4 creating a "New Folder" but I'm missing something..... I do not have a problem d.d notes into a folder.
-
@janrif watch closely what I do in the animated gif above, where the mouse moves. I click outside that field to finalize creating the folder.

@WildEnte I hate to appear dumb but after you click outside that field, I see that a new folder is finalized & placed in the tree but it appears to me that it appears as a nested new folder. I don't see how a parent new folder is created w/o d.d. Or, at least, I can't seem to make that happen on my end. Where is your cursor focused before text you create a new folder? I've watched the animation a number of times and am obviously missing something. TIA

@janrif these gifs loop. hopefully this one makes it clear

@WildEnte Great illustration; thanks for taking the time! Now I get it. To create a "new folder" user has to focus on a note item, follow steps & "new (parent) folder" is created. If focus is on a folder when "new folder" is created, the "new folder" appears as a 'child/nested' folder. In a way it's a bit mysterious but now I've got it. Another Vivaldi mystery solved! Thanks again.

Haha, sweet @WildEnte - very nice.

actually nothing has to be focused for the parent folder. Just click empty space below the trash can but above the horizontal divider line. Then click the folder icon.

In notes panel, after creation of a new note Folder, the Return key does not unfocus the field for the name of folder. Seems to be a bug.
But Shift+Tab works.But Notes tab works to end creation of folder with Return key.
I will check for a bug tracker entry.
I reported this bug now:
VB-90279 "Return key does not confirm creation of folder in Notes Panel" -
@janrif You found a bug.

Yes, it's one of the (many) quirks of the Vivaldi UI. If focusing a folder when clicking New Folder, a sub-folder will be created. Which I guess makes sense in a tree-view listing, but can be confusing to users not familiar with the interface.
The problem however, is that if the user has a lot of notes/folders, filling up the vertical space, there is no "blank space" to select for creating a new top-level folder.
A workaround, as has already been noted, is to focus a top-level note instead before clicking New Folder. It there's no note on the top level, another workaround is to make sure "Trash/Deleted" is focused instead. Which is illogical, one would assume a new "Trash" folder would be created...
This is a problem in all tree-view UI in Vivaldi, Bookmarks, Notes. They will have to add some "empty space" to the tree to allow top-level folders to be created if the list is "full".
This is also the cause of users being unable to set the root bookmarks folder as bookmarks bar, as you cannot click any empty space to set it...

@DoctorG I can report the above for a bug, if you would be so kind as to check the VBs for any already existing first?

If did that and could not find any in tracker.
Thats why i reported to Vivaldi bug tracker internally. -
@DoctorG OK I have reported it as:
VB-90280: Vivaldi tree-view UI lacks blank space for selecting the root element
This is not the same as your Enter issue
-
@Pathduck Confirmed.
