@guigirl I'm getting a number on my Feeds panel in my install. I think it's been there since 5.2, definitely since the first 5.3 version.

Using latest Win 10, if that makes any difference.

@guigirl Check if you have ticked this:

P.S. Yes, it's weird that it has to be this way. Maybe worth a report for at least providing a duplicate entry for Feeds alone.

Thanks both of you. I need to provide a little extra info, but first i'll answer the question asked of me.

@npro said in Exasperating absence of new feed items visual indicator.:

Check if you have ticked this

            Yes, it's ticked, ta anyway.

            Supplementary Info to my OP.

In fact i do frequently see indicators, eg, here's my current status:

            c82f2f80-64cd-4409-9fba-3a9f753060d0-image.png

The problem leading to my OP's complaint is [i think, maybe] a combo of multiple V behaviours/characteristics:

            • The actual explicit Feeds page, when opened as a tab, for reasons that seem silly design to me, apparently never gets any status icon denoting "unread feeds" [see my preceding pic]
            • My V [again, per preceding pic (but i failed to mention/explain this in my OP)] clearly is capable of displaying the indicators in the Status Bar, & in the Web Panel
            • Another pertinent aspect of IMO silly design is that tabs that i have chosen to hibernate, infuriatingly get "awakened" simply by my routine habit [dozens of times a day] of scrolling tabs via mousewheel in the tabbar [the bloody obvious design requirement, just like both TST & Sidebery provide in FF, is for a setting users can enable to skip all hibernated tabs during scrolling; i mean, duh!]
            • Another pertinent aspect of IMO silly design [albeit one i believe will be defended to the death by all the longterm M2 & M3ers here] is that the mere act of accidentally or circumstantially activating/viewing a new feed item in the Feeds tab, forces [apparently afaict with no control possible by User] its status to change from "unseen", to "seen" [or some similar linguistic nonsense], which then ipso facto decrements those pictured count indicators by one
            • So if at a given moment my hibernated background Feeds tab happens to have only a single unseen unread item in it, & then i accidentally/involuntarily awaken it whilst wheel-scrolling through my tabbar's multiple open tabs, pouf bang zap, all iconised count-indicators zero-out, leaving me with, per my OP Subject, "exasperating absence of new feed items visual indicator" --> laying the responsibility entirely on me to remember, later, that i still have an unread item here
            • Furthermore, see my final pic below, being the same scenario as my preceding pic, except that now ALL my new still-UNREAD/UNWATCHED feed items have lost their count-indicator, once again depriving me of any visual reminder that i still have unread/unwatched items here, once i scroll or click away to read all my other tabs

            07e143d5-3570-4662-957b-fd738238bbb8-image.png

I'm so exasperated at this perverse V Feeds / Mail design philosophy, mandating this unseen vs unread dichotomy which is completely anathema to my preferred paradigm, that i think i'll now investigate if i can install the same or similar RSS AddOn into my Thunderbird as i already use in FF, & if so, i'll just disable Feeds altogether in V.

Solved it, for now, via a good ol' classic workaround.

It's niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice; items stay Unread til i explicitly mark them Read, thus preserving the visual icon counter & obviating all necessity of me having to rely on my decrepit memory.

                @guigirl heathen

Usually on Win11 running Vivaldi Snapshot builds. Opinionated about working efficiently with email. Folders are evil | Mail workflow: receive, read, reply, mark as read, done.
