Privacy options too limited
-
In private mode, the browser is still showing things which are not in line with privacy. I hope this can be changed in the future.
- Often, I have a private window open, next to the regular browser window. Unfortunately, the name of the site I have opened in the private window is always visible. This should be changed!
- Even in private mode, when visiting a website where I have to use forms and such (user names, passwords), suggestions are shown based on history/cookies etc. This should not be the case.
- Similar with using the address line, it should not show history or bookmark suggestions when entering a web address or search request.
It would be great if it were possible to choose such privacy settings in my favorite browser!
Thanks! André -
@Stiller3 Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
Private/Incognito mode must be one of the most misunderstood browser features. People seem to think of it as some kind of privacy silver-bullet or "ninja" mode. It is not.
The whole idea behind using a private window is to not have history/cookies from the private browsing session show up in a regular session. It also has some minor privacy improvements like blocking third-party cookies by default. It is meant for browsing sessions where you might want the activity to be hidden from other people using your computer - it is NOT meant to and CANNOT hide your activity from your ISP and sites you visit.
On your points:
-
How do you suppose this should be implemented? I don't really understand what you mean. Should the window title be blurred or hidden? The only thing this would be good for is if someone is looking at your screen from behind your back...
-
Browser history, bookmarks, saved credentials and autofill data from the regular session is still available in a private window. It is how it's meant to work. Otherwise it would be hard to get anything done.
-
Same as above.
The whole point is to not have data from the private session show up in the regular session, not the other way around.

@Stiller3 The name of the site can be hidden by pinning the tab.
-
@Stiller3 , use the SiteBleacher extension, it does the same as a Private Window by default, deleting all data from the sites you visit, except from the whitelisted.
You are only anonym when you visit a page, when you use a VPN or at least a Proxie, alternatively you can use the Andi search engine, because it has a reader mode option in the search results, where you can read anonymosly the page content (most pages).https://andisearch.com/?query=%s

Thanks for your extensive reply and comments. I do know what it means to be in 'private mode'. However, I think on the matters I mentioned above, perhaps that mode could be improved and offer even more privacy than it does until now.
