Vivaldi crashes at startup
-
I installed Windows 7 x64 the other day with the latest Vivaldi (5.2.2623.46) and the browser crashes at startup.
The first thing I noticed is that after a fresh install the browser starts without problem. The crash at startup occurred after I changed startup preferences.
At that point I closed the network connection and the browser did not crash.
After some testing I found that if I changed the "Startup with" setting to anything other than "Last Session" the browser crashed at startup, but only with open network connection.
I did the test with versions 5.2.2623.26, 5.2.2623.28 and 5.2.2623.46. They all crashed at startup when the network was open and "Startup with" was not set to "Last session".
I recently used Vivaldi version 4.1.2369.16 on Windows 10 and it did not have this issue. So I installed this version on Windows 7 and it also does not crash at startup. In addition, this version loads considerably faster.
Can anyone confirm the crash with the more recent versions of Vivaldi on Windows 10 and 11? I do not have this issue on Linux Manjaro.

No, all nice for me on Windows 11.
I installed Windows 7 x64 the other day with the latest Vivaldi (5.2.2623.46) and the browser crashes at startup.
Please check Troubleshooting issues.
If you run Window 7 N please update Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/shell-experience/windows-media-feature-pack-for-windows-7FYI, I do not run Windows 7 N or KN. Also, I did the test with only the Start Page and Vivaldi's home page.
It looks to me like this issue has a lot to do with what is described in this thread: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/74261/browser-crashes-on-startup?page=1

@hobeets and which points had you tested from Troubleshooting issues?

None that matches the behaviour I described above. But it closely matches the issue discussed in the thread I linked to in my previous reply. In particular the fact that older versions of Vivaldi do not have this issue, which seems session-startup related. I have used version 4.1 extensively on Windows 10 for about 8 months (since its release) and never had any issues. So for the time being I will use it on Windows 7 and report back if related issues show up.
-
@hobeets The issue discussed in that thread occurred in versions 5.2.2623.34 and earlier (5.2.2623.xx), and was universal to all platforms. The current version (5.2.2623.46) does not crash on startup on Windows 10 and 11 for me. Did the browser produce any crash logs? See: Report crashes on Windows
For more information, please refer to the Troubleshooting issues guide. -
@pafflick I cannot download https://downloads.vivaldi.com/stable/Vivaldi.5.2.2623.43.x64.exe (says it doesn't exist), but I will reproduce the crash with 5.2.2623.46 and send the report.
-
@hobeets My mistake - the current version is 5.2.2623.46 (I was looking at the last minor update). Nevertheless, we didn't have similar reports for any of the recent versions, and it's been a couple of weeks since that issue you referred to has been fixed.
-
@pafflick I checked the troubleshooting page. The only "solution" is to delete the user data folder and to not change the default "Startup with" preference.
I just filed a bug report with crash dump attached. Hopefully it will be helpful.
-
I did some further testing to see if I could isolate the version that introduced this issue (at least for Windows 7). I went up the minor versions, starting with 4.3, then 5.0 and 5.1 and finally 5.2.
The startup crash after changing the "Startup with" preference first occurs with version 5.2.2623.18.
To be sure, I tested 5.1.2567.73 and it did not crash.
To be clear, all you need to do to let Vivaldi crash (on Windows 7 x64) is do a clean install of Vivaldi 5.2 (no extensions), run it, change the "Startup with" preference to something other than "Last session", close it and start it again.
I'll be using version 5.1.2567.73 for the time being.

@hobeets Thank you for this additional information. Unfortunately, it looks like there is some other factor here at play, as I'm unable to reproduce it on Windows 10 and 11 - all startup options work as expected here. Perhaps it's a Windows 7 thing.
Anyway, if you'd like to take this further, please take some time to read the article on how to report a bug, and follow the instructions to report this issue to the developers directly. Thank you! -

Thank you!Apparently, the bug was introduced in version 5.2 and it is definitely network/last-session related (no crash with network disabled). Anyway, I already reported the issue, as I mentioned two posts earlier.

I had to reinstall the Vivaldi browser two times because it crashes on startup. The funny thing is that it works for several days, and then it crashes. I have the latest version. I am curious if anyone knows about the problem. I am running Windows 11. I just disconnected the laptop from the Internet, and voila, the browser did NOT crash!
