No Reader View For Mac Users
-
I have been having a dickens of a time because of tiny text that I cannot control without repeatedly changing settings. The Help instructions are apparently only for Windows users. There is no button for this at the right side of address bar.
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/reader-view/ -
@Echosyn Which website are you trying to view with reader mode?
I've had no trouble using reader mode in the sites I visit on my mac.
-
Until 3 weeks ago there was always a reader view button at the right side of the address bar and to the left of the bookmarks button. Now it is gone after I cloned the OS from a 2011 iMac to this 2015 Imac. I went to Vivaldi helps which is not a help in this matter. Please explain how this works for you.
-
@Echosyn I too miss the button in the address bar; but I long ago set a keyboard shortcut... (^R) for Reader View and ^βP for my command chain: Reader View, Hide UI... I use it extensively!

The latest SnapShot 5.3.2669.3 seems to have resolved this issue:
Fixes usually find their way into Stable updates...RSN
And -as has been mentioned- some pages won't accommodate the standard Reader View CSS, anyway....
-
Thanks. I will checkout the latest snapshot.

@Echosyn I think it's important you understand that the Reader View button won't show on all websites. I don't know what internal magic it uses to determine if a site works with Reader or not, but for instance on this forum, it won't show.
Like @OakdaleFTL posted above, mapping a keyboard hotkey to Reader view might help trigger the view even when the button does not show - for SOME sites.
You were also asked to post links to sites where it didn't work as expected.
Here's one where it works for me:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/12/russia-ukraine-war-news-live-updates/I don't think updating to Snapshot will help in this case, and snapshots are by definition unstable and buggy, so perhaps not the best choice for you.

Sure, sure! You can say it...
But I've never had problems running a SnapShot and the Stable, even at the same time!
Shirley, tell 'em... (Oops! Got a crick in my double-entendre β> Gotta walk it off.)

Last night I updated Vivaldi to 5.2.2623.46 so I will see how it performs. There is no reader view. I do not give up easily. This new style of software with peekaboo controls is not easy to accept and it's non-intuitive . It is not rational to expect a person to scan the cursor over a page in order to find the invisible widgets and controls.
I tried your suggested site and I saw the Reader View peekaboo icon where It used to be always visible.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/12/russia-ukraine-war-news-live-updates/.
My main problem with Mac is that I have never had control, even with Accessibility, of the size of fonts. Too often the fonts are too tiny to read when i go to a page and when I print a page. Reader view does a fine job of preparing a page for print but it is not universal enough to prevent tiny print that is illegible. The zoom in View in the toolbar is basically useless.
What am I overlooking? I hope to have time to share screen shots of what I experience. -

Then Reader View works fine. It just doesn't work for every site.

How exactly? It works fine here for zooming a webpage. I usually use Ctrl+Mousewheel but using the UI control works exactly the same way.
prevent tiny print that is illegible.
Web site zoom does not control print output (unfortunately). If you want bigger text in printouts you can use the scaling controls in the print dialog.

(I don't have a printer but Print to PDF is the same) -
If you have a problem with fonts being too small, why not set a minimum font size?
-
@Streptococcus @Pathduck path
Would that be in Accessibility in Preference? I tried that many times and it does not work. I have never seen scaling controls when I have used 8 printers, Canon, HP, Brother since 2000. Perhaps we have a language barrier. What are other terms for "Scaling control"?
Present printer is Brother laser printer. Mac software package works best with Safari. Firefox never gives me a preview page. The Vivaldi magnification bar at the bottom right of this page is selectively functional.5 minutes ago this new version 5.2.2623.46 crashed.

Present printer is Brother laser printer. You'll have to figure out how it works in your printers dialog, depends on the printer how obvious it is I guess. Read the manual or click around until you find it? I just showed how it works in the standard print dialog.

Vivaldi has a setting for default font size, but that's only if the site does not override it. Settings > Webpages > Fonts.
You can use DPI Scaling in your OS if it supports it. On Windows 10 it works fine with Vivaldi, at 150% scaling.
Best if probably to set Default webpage zoom in Settings > Webpages.
Then again, this won't affect printout font size... -
"Default Web Page Zoom" is what I mentioned in other terms above. It is here on the bottom right and set at 120% but it is inconsistently effective.
-
@Echosyn
The settings for font sizes are in Preferences > Webpages right at the bottom. -
In my Sierra OS In System Preferences the last thing in the list is Accessibility and that does not work which is a shame.
Did you mean Vivaldi Preferences? -
@Streptococcus I see that you refer to what I said does not work consistently.

YES! I mean, certainly he did: yes.
It's been a long and frustrating day for me...
I still find the ubiquitous β+ (for bigger), β- (for smaller) and β0 (for 100%...) the easiest and quickest way to accommodate my failing eyesight!
(And I'm addicted to Reader View! Have you recovered from its icons reticence?:)I'm mostly wrestling with M3 (Vivaldi Mail beta) β just some minor glitches to work out, or around..
How's it going, otherwise?
-
Thank you for that +or- shortcut. It seems to work universally and that is what I was seeking. My life situation has precluded me from ever having time to set aside priorities and deep dive learn the vast landscape of computers, WWW and Internet. Viz: I designed and built the Data Services home for the Fed's Adult Informstion Services computer room complex for the central United States that included the main distribution at 3 phase 400 amps ;, two 48 breaker panels and down to the outlets and surge suppressors. I also installed the HVAC system electrical distribution, built the elevated floor and pulled al of the coax cables . The only time I used a computer was for ordering parts. I am a whiz at utility electricity and bioelectricity but learning computer lingo is catch as catch can.
For example: How do you get that symbol on the command button to type? -
@Echosyn
I do not mean the zoom. Scroll down to the bottom of that page, to where it says "Fonts". There you can set a minimum font size. -
@Echosyn said in No Reader View For Mac Users:

I don't know how to get it -- from the keyboard! But Mac gives you direct access to many character sets, many alphabets, and for those characters that can be typed, a keyboard viewer! (I keep it on screen -partly- because my most comfortable keyboard doesn't show Caps Lock on (or off).
You can access the emojis and special characters pane from the menu bar or use a shortcut... (I use ^ββ§ to invoke it; other combinations with the spacebar are documented.)[You'll also discover that Sys Prefs > Keyboard > Shortcuts will "acquire" some from your installed apps... Neat, huh?!]
