Google account sync - I think its mandatory
-
Hi there, I love Vivaldi - its like having Opera back but with Chrome speed. There is one downside which is keeping me, and as I heard a lot of others from using it as my main browser. Not being able to sync my history, plugins, bookmarks etc across devices is holding me back. At work I don't have admin rights, but chrome works just fine. My Android phone is synced as well so whenever I quickly look sth. up its easy to go to my global history and extract the info I need from my desktop. Oh and ontop of that. Please don't reinvent the wheel and do the bad old Opera thing and make Vivaldis own sync-service. I've got enough accounts already. No need to add another one to the collection unless it incorporates my other identities. I wish you all the best, and I will stop by now and then to admire the progress GREAT WORK so far! Cheers, wanderstudent

I agree as well. Chrome's best feature for me was the syncing service

wanderstudentI think that most of the Vivaldi users (including me) wants exactly the opposite of what you're asking.
In short stay away from google as possible as you can, and put the data online only if they are managed by an absolutely trustworty company.
Like Opera was, like Vivaldi is.

I don't care aboyt Google or not, but I really plan to migrate to Vivaldi for all my Mac/Windows browsers and I really need to sync them at the same time, let's say when I navigate with my tabs on MAC, I want to see it in Windows browser almost realtime, because I sit in front laptop and PC all day and then coming to home with Mac-Laptop and want to continue see my tabs from Windows.
It can be done many ways, Google doing it amazing and realtime, maybe Vivaldi can do the same but base on Vivaldi account or any open source account.
I think the best solution would be Login through Google or other OpenID and see Vivaldi's profile. -
Here is the AMA answer from Jon von Tetzchner about the major features they are working on adding.
Sync and Mail are the top two.

I love Vivaldi - its like having Opera back but with Chrome speed.
But who wants Chrome's speed? Chrome is the slowest browser currently available, due to its flawed design piping everything through the disk. And yes, Vivaldi inherits that.
Please don't reinvent the wheel and do the bad old Opera thing and make Vivaldis own sync-service. I've got enough accounts already. No need to add another one to the collection unless it incorporates my other identities.
A non-Google product like Vivaldi won't live off a Google service designed for their own browser. That is simply a matter of doing clean business.

I see three problems with using Google to sync:
-
differences in the data between Vivaldi and Chrome; so it might not be possible or it might screw up an existing Chrome account
-
Google might not want to be someone else's server farm without some commercial arrangement
-
it's Google⦠many people (myself included) are doing their best to avoid having their life harvested by Google, Facebook and Twitter!

@The_Solutor I think Google is widely regarded as a pretty trustworthy company, considering Chrome is by far the most popular browser on the market and many people trust Google with very private information.
-
@pewm-pewm Oh dear. Really? If you wish to believe that fantasy then fine, but it will not be at all difficult for you to find multitudes who vehemently disagree with you. It is simply spurious logic to extrapolate from Chrome having a sizeable user-base, that said base ipso facto trusts Google. In many cases what you have interpreted as "trust", is IMO more likely actually "ignorance, apathy & laziness". Not at all equivalent. Rapacious privacy thieves like Google rely [indeed built a business model] on this human weakness.

I would also like to have this feature!
But it's only a matter of time for Vivaldi to have his own sync! -
What is the status on the syncing accross multiple devices? I read on another 2-year-old thread a reply from a vivaldi team member that this feature was back then among the top 3 next priorities to be implemented. What has happened, not a priority feature anymore? I installed vivaldi from the first available release and must say, I would love to use it in a productive way at work. The missing of this feature is the only reason from keeping me to do so.

Vivaldi resorting to Google sync were the first and last event for abandoning Vivaldi forever. Seeing as Jon's vision always entailed giving the user the choice to do it his way, that decision would utterly betray his legacy and any trust the Vivaldi user base invested in him and his visions.
So please extend your topic title by "to stay away from it".

oops, just realized this topic is solely about "google account sync", i dont mind what it is using, but think that syncing in general is a key feature nowadays! custom solution? other solutions available?

@koulaouzidis
https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/help-test-sync/... not yet between devices because the Vivaldi mobile browser is still far from finished, but they are working on it.
-
mobile i dont mind so much, but syncing between desktop installed vivaldi instances (one at the office PC, one at my laptop) would be great!
