Are labels synced with mail provider in some sort of way?
-
Hi, I would like to know. If I switch to Vivaldi mail client and use labels, which isn't something my mail provider (mailbox.org) has as a functionality.
If I ever later on decide to go with another mail client, will I lose my whole labeling system? Does the labels work only inside the Vivaldi Mail clients? Seems like other services like Google do not recognize them either. Are labels gonna show in any mobile app?
I just want to prevent scenario where I pour time into organizing everything and losing it more down the road.

Ok, so there's a couple of things here.
Vivaldi Labels
Vivaldi Labels is synced to the server, but the flags made in Vivaldi have a prefix
$labelviv
// Vivaldi ($labelviv), // Thunderbird ($label1, $label2...) // and Evolution/M2 ($Label)
Thunderbird, Evolution, and Opera M2 only sync their default labels. They do not sync if you change name of the label itself. We on the other hand
- sync all your custom labels AND
- continue syncing any default labels that you've used in Thunderbird, Evolution or M2
Now the downside is that other clients won't recognize the Vivaldi Mail client labels.
Here is a list of the default labels that are synced for Thunderbird, Evolution and M3
`
'Important'
$label1: (Thunderbird)
$Labelimportant: (Evolution)
$Label1: (Opera M2)'Work'
$label2: (Thunderbird)
$Labelwork: (Evolution)'Personal'
$label3: (Thunderbird)
$Labelpersonal: (Evolution)'To Do'
$label4: (Thunderbird)
$Labeltodo: (Evolution)'Later'
$label5: (Thunderbird)
$Labellater: (Evolution)'Meeting'
$Label2: (Opera M2)'Valuable'
$Label3: (Opera M2)'To Do'
$Label4: (Opera M2)'Send Reply'
$Label5: (Opera M2)'Call Back'
$Label6: (Opera M2)'Funny'
$Label7: (Opera M2)
`Maybe we should offer to make these syncable labels from inside Vivaldi (note Evolution also supports the Thunderbird labels)?
Vivaldi Flags
These are fully compatible with the Apple Mail flags
The color codes are just used by Apple Mail and Vivaldi Mail. The other clients and webmail will just use a red flag or star (so all flags will show up in other clients, but the colors will only sync to Apple Mail)Vivaldi Custom Folders
This is an option for you if you want to want to be sure that everything is compatible with other servers. Custom folders are synced with the server (unless you use a POP3 which doesn't have any folders on the server)

@gmg Ok now I am confused.
Are you talking about labels of Vivaldi Webmail service or labels or Vivaldi Browser mail client.... I was asking about Vivaldi Browser Mail Client (sorry if I put it in wrong section of forums).
I have email at mailbox.org and it just is unclear whether labels and flags sync. I don't see any labels in mailbox.org client itself and all flags appear to be presented as a "starred" mail. Which I am totally ok with. As I understand that maybe they do not support this.
What I am curious is that if any other mail client other than mail client in vivaldi browser will be able to display these.
But if you were actually talking about vivaldi browser mail client, than if I understand it correctly, all labels and flags will be only visible in Vivaldi Mail Client again... So they are synced, just not in a way other clients would understand.
Labels might work with Thunderbird, Flags with Apple mail and folders with others.
Was it by choice to not sync labels in more compatible way or there just isn't a one standard for this and therefore can't really be done?
-
@gmg thank you for the information on how this works behind the scenes. I think it would be good for Vivaldi to have the same default labels as Thunderbird & evolution and make them compatible, as this makes it so much easier for people to just try out Vivaldi.
Self defined custom labels could then be of the ยก^~labelviv type. Everything that lowers the entry barrier and reduces the fear of being locked into a proprietary system will help acceptance of Vivaldi mail.

@hallker
I'm talking about the Vivaldi Browser Mail ClientThe labels/flags will sync to the server, but not all clients will show them.
Other things are not standard except Custom Folders.
Flags
There's only a standard for the default Red Flag/Star.
In short
-
All Vivaldi Browser Mail Flags -> Red flags/stars other clients (except right color will also appear in Apple Mail)
-
Red flags/stars other clients -> Red flag in Vivaldi Mail
Labels
No standard for labels (and don't know too many clients that have something like that except us, Thunderbird, Evolution, and M2).
In short
Vivaldi Mail will sync to Thunderbird, Evolution, M2 if they were originally made in those clients.
Vivaldi Mail will sync the names of custom labels (unlike the other clients) and show them in other Vivaldi Mail instances.
Custom Folders (IMAP folders)
When syncing to other clients through IMAP, Gmail will change their labels to custom folders since there's no standard for labels.
All clients and webmail that support IMAP should support Custom Folders since there's a standard there.

@gmg Awesome, thanks for your response... Knowing that those aren't ONLY in Vivaldi Mail Client makes it more likely for me to invest my time and try using it properly.
Glad you found time to respond, thanks again and have a nice day.

Uh wow. Reading some other posts, I was convinced that GMail was very good with labels. Now I realise that this is in fact absolutely not the case, as can be seen by how labels are mapped to IMAP and just become folders. Weird stuff, I'd have expected them to just be compatible with Thunderbird labels at least.
Thanks a lot for the insight.

@gmg Are there any plans to be able to import labels from M2? It's the one feature that is missing for me from the import.
I have quite a few labels in my M2 client. I could recreate them myself in M3, but it would take some time. But if importing labels is already on the roadmap, then I'd wait.
