Solved Mouse gesture preview animation speed depends on monitor refresh rate
-
Hello Vivaldi team!
Pretty minor observation, but it looks like the speed of the preview animation for mouse gesture mappings in Vivaldi Settings is tied to the monitor's refresh rate. This makes the animation play faster on monitors which have higher refresh rates. It looks normal only at 60 Hz.
I recorded a demo video showing the different playback speeds when the monitor is set to 60, 120, 144, and 240 Hz.
I guess this animation is configured to move a certain distance per frame instead of distance per time unit.
There's no loss of functionality as far as I can tell. Crucially, both defining and executing gestures work fine. The preview just looks a little silly. Overall this isn't a big deal, but I couldn't find any prior reports when I searched the forum. Probably not a very high priority to fix. Maybe this can help someone on the team get a fancy gaming monitor to test with.
Thanks, and keep up the great work! I love Vivaldi.
Environment
- Vivaldi 5.1.2567.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
- I don't think this is a recent regression, but I haven't tested other versions
- Windows 10 Version 21H2 (Build 19044.1526)
- Samsung Odyssey G7 (240 Hz)
- Nvidia RTX 2070 Super (driver version 472.12)
- Vivaldi 5.1.2567.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit)

This has been fixed in 5.5.2805.32 stable, released on 2022-10-05. (changelog)
Great job as always, Vivaldi team!

@aldaviva I have a 120hz monitor and I do notice it's a bit "fast". I see what you mean.
Also - there's 240hz monitors now?
Do you notice the difference from say 120hz when using regular apps or is it just for playing twitch games like CS:GO? I definitely notice a difference in "sharpness" from 60hz to 100hz but after that I think there's diminishing gains. -
Noticed this as well a couple of days ago. My old laptop has a 60 Hz display and the animations have a comfortable speed. On my new 120 Hz laptop they are going really fast which is kind of uncomfortable to look at.

@pathduck Yeah, it's definitely diminishing. I would say the smoothness improvement in games from 60 to 120Hz is really nice, but above that, it's perceptible but not that beneficial to me. For non-game apps I don't find higher refresh rates are all that worthwhile, and I would instead prefer to prioritize better image quality, resolution, or physical screen size.
