New profile: import from other profile not working?
-
I think this classifies as a bug, but I don't know if it's already known/reported and I wonder what should be expected.
Usecase 1) I want to create a second Vivaldi profile based off my main profile and modify by removing instead of starting from scratch
Usecase 2) My existing super old continously updated profile causes some bugs that I don't see in a fresh profile, so I want to move to a new profileProblem 1) When setting up the new profile, I get the choice to import bookmarks from Vivaldi (which I would like), but then it tells me to close the browser to continue. I have not yet been able to import bookmarks through the regular setup process or File -> import from Vivaldi. (I assume import through a bookmarks html file will work, but that's not the point)
Problem 2) There is apparently no way to import Mail, account infos and calendar entries from Vivaldi (yet)
I assume problem 2) should be in the pipeline and doesn't require a bug report, what about problem 1? Am I missing something?
EDIT: turns out I posted about pretty much the same problems and some more two years ago and forgot

@wildente The first case fails because it’s the same application. In my experience it isn’t worth trying to fix a profile, you have to start from scratch to make sure you don’t get any bugs from a dirty profile, because you can never be sure which parts of your profile are really broken. Backup profile, delete profile and get up to speed with sync and manual backups (e.g. feeds, search engines). This will take some time to get the settings up to speed and recreating menu customization is horrific, but in the end you will have a working profile.

@wildente Having the same issue. I don't have a 'buggy' profile, but would like to have a second one with stuff for school/work. I created a second profile but when trying to import my settings/history/bookmarks from my primary profile it says I have to close the browser before importing. But closing the browser (at least my main profile) still gives me this error.
It's so messy. Why is there even an option to import from Vivaldi if it doesn't work? Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I followed all the instructions Vivaldi gives me and from the help pages.
Update:
Eventually I decided to just copy theBookmarks
folder fromVivaldi\User Data\Default
(or the Profile folder of the profile you want to export). I copied the file to my Documents folder as a backup and then copied it to the folder of my new profile. It feels kinda 'dirty' but it works. It also includes all the bookmark descriptions and nicknames. Just restart vivaldi (vivaldi://restart
) and let sync do it's thing.
When I did this I was having tons of problems with sync so I thought it was because of how I imported the bookmarks, but later it turned out to be maintenance/outage. It works great now. -

That makes sense. But when I set up a new profile, then I would at least like to be able to import the bookmarks and passwords from the previous profile. Vivaldi offers the option, it doesn't work (which it should if the option exists) and then it fails but states that it was successful.
