Vivaldi Feed Reader vs. Thunderbird Feed Reader
-
Just for a lark, I thought I'd check out how the Mozilla Thunderbird RSS reader compared to the one in Vivaldi. Turns out that in Thunderbird, you have the option to display a summary of the feed post, or display the actual web page in Thunderbird itself. And you have all of the normal right-click options (save image, links, etc.) right there too. In Vivaldi you have to click on "Open Article" to get the full post in a new tab. A few of my feeds have either an almost complete article in the post, or a full size image in the comic ones. But for the majority of them, I have to take the extra step of opening a new tab in order to actually read them.
So of course, that begs the question, will we ever get an option to view full web pages with the RSS reader in Vivaldi??
And if anyone's interested, the feed reader in Outlook in most cases is no better than, and in a few areas, much worse than Vivaldi.

@fred8615 I wouldn’t bet on it. Whether to show the full page or just a preview is entirely in the hands of the content creator. Unsurprisingly most content creators want you to visit their webpage for views, hits and ads. You have a choice there, either visit their page and support them, or decline and leave it be.
And yes, I know some RSS readers provide support by loading the full page… let’s just say this is not what the content creator intended and I would say it’s unlikely Vivaldi would take such measures, no matter what you and I think about it personally.
-
Time to switch to Mozilla then?
-
@fred8615 If that’s the top priority for you, then yes. But see it this way: By using Thunderbird you have to open an additional application. In Vivaldi it’s just an extra tab for the full article.

@luetage Normally that would be true, but I'm physically disabled and anything that saves effort is a plus for me. Moving to and clicking on an "Open article" button so many times adds up after awhile. ☹
Plus Thunderbird has spam filtering, and automatic emptying of the spam and trash folders. More effort savings.
If someone officially from Vivaldi would say that an option for viewing a full web page of an RSS feed is planned for the future, I would probably stick it out. But if it's a definite no, then I'll likely move on.

@fred8615 I don't speak for Vivaldi obviously. Anyway, writing a mod automating the opening of the tab could theoretically be possible.

you compare a (more or less) 15+ years old mailclient with a mailclient, which is in beta state, not fair
in view of the programming so far, you will surely wait for this special feature for years, so it is certainly more pleasent for you if you use thunderbird
(I don't want to push you away from vivaldi but in your use case thunderbird seems to be better)
of course you are welcome to try again vivaldi mail/rss after some time -
@fred8615 I'll say the same thing about feed readers that I say about browsers: Use whatever feed reader works for you.
-
@fred8615 I'll just add my pet peeve about the reader here (again...
)
Navigating feeds by keyboard is a PITA as you
- use cursor keys + DEL from the index to scan the articles
- have to reach for mouse/trackpad to click the "open article" button
- read the article, close with e.g. CTRL-W
- have to press F7, F9 to get the cursor back to the feeds index
- go to 1
So I agree that there should be options about displaying the content e.g. [don't show / always show / show upon pressing ENTER] as well as better keyboard shortcuts to switch to feed reader index / content panes.

@mossman Agree with you on reading articles, but I will say there is one thing that Vivaldi does that is better than Thunderbird and Outlook (and the primary reason I'm sticking with V for now) is that you can read feeds with your emails. In the other programs you have to click on each individual feed to read any articles in them. So any effort I would save from having to click on the Open Article button sometimes is not only taken away, but even exacerbated.
Also, Vivaldi notifies you when a feed is updated. The other two don't.
