Getting rid of the encryption password
-
I would like to get rid of the encryption password when logging into Vivaldi Sync on Windows.
My data are just a bunch of website bookmarks, nothing personal. I also delete my browsing history regularly.
Is there any way to remove this key from my profile/ my sync, so that I only use the password? So far I have understood that when creating the first sync, I can simply leave the encryption password empty.
But what about removing the encryption password, when it is already set?

When Sync was first implemented then, indeed, it was possible to leave the encryption password field empty when using Sync for the first time, but that didn't mean that no encryption password was created for the data. The account's login password was set as the encryption password instead.
We quickly realised that this confused users as they forgot that by not creating a unique password, the login password became the encryption password. Also, changing the login password would not update the encryption password, so many people found themselves losing their browsing data. That's why we removed the option to skip creating the encryption password.
You can still use your login password as the encryption password, but you have to type it in consciously. It's less safe and we don't recommend it, but we won't prevent you from using the same password for login and encrypting.
Currently, to change the encryption password, you need to delete the data from the servers, set a new encryption password and upload your browser data to the servers again. -
Sad. I have been testing Chromium browsers including Vivaldi, Opera, and Brave; and was about to choose Vivaldi after resetting my PC until I faced this hassle.
