Vivaldi Browser - functionality that would be nice to see and bugs that would be nice not to see ;)

  • [EDIT: 1. I try to edit this topic for all your request - it will be easier to see what has already been reported. 2. In the beginning there will probably be a little messy but I will try to do frequent cleanup. 3. I'm going to split the request to critical, important and less important. 4. As you can see my English is far from the ideal so feel free to PM me what should be corrected.] Firstly I perfectly realizes that it is only the very beginning of the development of the new browser. I just want to share my ideas and hear your ideas on what you would want to see in future versions, and what bothers you in the present one? Functionality: 1. Session - Just like in the old Opera only with better management (for those who do not know it is the possibility to save all open tabs in a single folder). Maybe at the speed dial page add the "Session" button between Bookmark and History? This could be viewed as a normal folder with tabs. For those who do not see the use of this brief example: you started to look for information about quantum physics, black holes etc. (Is there anyone on the internet who did not seek information about this topics? ;)) and you know how the internet works... you end with 50 opened tabs. And now someone else wants to use the computer and you are afraid that he/she closed your tab? You will not save it all to bookmarks right? So you save it in session and can restore it later. It would be great if you could protect selected sessions using password. [EDIT: I see there is a button "bookmark all opened pages" but its not working] 2. Synchronization - Bookmark, Speed Dial, Note, Session etc. 3. Mouse Gestures - the ability to edit them (gestures don't work on Speed Dial page). 4. Privacy mode - not only on new window but also special tab next to normal one (but these are probably the limitations of chromium engine). 5. Stack tabs is hardly visible. Maybe better if stack tabs have title like "2 stack tabs"? 6. Select image for page in Speed Dial (because this is one of the priorities for the young browser :)) 7. RSS 8. Options to change the browser behavior after the close and open new tab (for example after close I want go to to the left one not last used tab, when I open new tab using scroll on link in web page I want this new one open next to not on end) 9. No pin or lock tab :( 10. "Paste and go" in the address bar. 11. Cloning a tab does not clone its history but only open the current url as new tab. Cloning the history as well would be nice. 12. Dont neccesarily use the system proxy (custom proxy setting). 13. On setting you see cookie and can delete it but can't check what is inside. 14. Make it possible to drag out a tab from a group, 15. Add tab-stacking for tab-bar in vertical mode. 16. Add option to disable tab preview when using the tab-bar vertically (display only the title like in horizontal mode). 17. Settings menu as a tab instead of in a window. 18. Restore last closed tab via Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+Shift+T. 19. Disable javascript in the gui. 20. Site-specific settings. 21. Provide a real context menu. 22. "Show image details..." via image context menu. 23. Allow to hide 'plus' on speed dial. 24. Improve download manager, make it more like O12. add option to open file location, add file details, allow me to choose where to save a file. 25. Show load status in % inside the status bar. 26. Title in Notes (btw screen + url is great!). Issues: 1. In Speed Dial new created page have url for description not page title like standard one. 2. Sometimes in bookmark page delete don't work if you check more then one page (and trash folder will be nice, now when you click delete you can't restore deleted page). 3. If you have additional buttons on the mouse they does not work even if you have assigned it to a standard feature. 4. "Trash Button" (to the right site of tabs) - You can not empty it. 5. HUGE BUG: When you open setting and close browser (without close setting window) and next close setting window when you try open browser again you have only setting window :D [Ctrl+N (recovers browser window for normal use) - Thanks for Fangsta] 6. No option to disable the password manager. It keeps asking for passwords. 7. Zoom in, out, reset shortcuts are not existent. This would be like in all other browsers, Ctrl+, Ctrl- and Ctrl0. They don't work. I guess they call them quick command but at least Ctrl scroll wheel works for zoom functions. 8. Windows titles - On Windows, the active tabs does not exposes the target window name to other softwares in Windows, this means other softwares that need to detect an open website or fill things like password managers will not work. Its just Vivaldi for all tabs. Not using the page title. 9. The settings gear at the bottom of the panel opens a new settings window with each press. 10. When you load a fullscreen application (Currently on the Microsoft MVA website watching some videos) the message "Vivaldi is showing in Fullscreen mode. Press F11 to exit." is not disappearing unless I completely closed the browser. Pressed F11 a few times and closed the tab, but it persists across all tabs until the browser is closed. 11. Also, changing my startup page in settings to www.google.co.uk does nothing. Reopening the settings menu shows that the startup page resets back to vivaldi.net. 12. Advanced install ignores selected custom folder. 13. opening links in new tabs does not send login credential on some sites (eg being logged in on twitter and opening a user profile link with right click -> 'open in new tab' opens the new tab but there I'm not logged in any more) 14. The first thing I do when I use a browser for the first time is setting duckduckgo as default search engine and removing google; after doing this, Vivaldi had become unusable, so I have added Google and ... it works again! 15. vivaldi://about has no title. 16. Search engines settings are only available under All settings. 17. With a dual monitor setup, with vivaldi on the right monitor, the menu opens on the wrong monitor at the right edge (Win 8.1 x64, Windows 7). 18. Drag'n'drop tab to bookmarks doesn't work. 19. Open in browser vivaldi.net (web page address doesnt matter. not blank), click on label #bookmark# located on the right of web page address entry field, window adding bookmark should opened, press cancel button, expected result: cancellation of adding web page to bookmarks, actual result: web page successfully added to bookmarks. 20. Unable to play Netflix videos. Get a message about using an official version of Chrome. 21. I tried opening an iTunes Store link and the app asked if it could launch the application. I gave it permission and the app opened in iTunes but it never popped up after loading in iTunes like it does in other browsers. 22. Another bug is with sites that have no valid certificates. It will not open the page and the tab will just show privacy concerns or something similar. But when you open a new windows and then try to open it, then you see the default Chrome SSL warning page, where you can ignore message and continue. It does not work when other tabs are opened it seems. It has to be on its own separated window.

  • @Fang:

    1. In Speed Dial new created page have url for description not page title like standard one (and you can't edit them only delete). [EDIT: OK, you can change it on bookmark page, but will be nice to can edit it on Speed Dial page (yep, I'm lazy :D)]

no issue here, you can edit it on speed dial, just pay more attention ;)

Oh, wow, that's actually true! Well, that's still a pretty poor design choice, IMO. The "edit" option should definitely be in the context menu too.

  • It works like editing the name of an iOS folder (I think the same in Windows?). Pretty straight forward and clean.

Thank you! But still think that browser should take description for page from title not url ;)

    Ok two more things:

    1. When I close tab I want go to to the left one not last used tab.
    2. HUGE BUG: When you open setting and close browser (without close setting window) and next close setting window when you try open browser again you have only setting window :D

  • I agree, while I never used sessions because I don't share my computer I used something similar like you explained.

I also have the constant need to save things which I need to open or read again later, I used plugins like Read it Later and similar. I think sessions is a similar idea, the point is you don't want to save them as bookmarks but just need them temporarily right?

I think we all do this eventually, its basically a reference. We need information but only for a specific task, so it does not fit into saving it as a bookmark.

    Bugs in my case:

*** No option to disable the password manager. It keeps asking for passwords.
*** Zoom in, out, reset shortcuts are not existent. This would be like in all other browsers, Ctrl+, Ctrl- and Ctrl0. They don't work. I guess they call them quick command but at least Ctrl scroll wheel works for zoom functions.
*** Windows titles - On Windows, the active tabs does not exposes the target window name to other softwares in Windows, this means other softwares that need to detect an open website or fill things like password managers will not work. Its just Vivaldi for all tabs. Not using the page title.

    Missing features

*** No pin or lock tab :(
Hell I need that, I sometimes are loading something which takes minutes in some webapp and I don't want to close it by mistake. Locked tabs is something I miss.
*** Private or porn mode. No, I don't use it for porn but for web testing since it does not save cookies and data, I use it for temporary testing things so its not saved to the cache

What I would like to see:
Let us create contextual searches on text selection, like to a translation page, or search somewhere. Can't remember which browser has this, but it lets you create your own contextual options for querying anything you want when a text is selected. You can then fit it to what you use the most. So when you right click a selected text you have the options available.

  • For zooming in and out on keyboard, you can use + and - on numpad, without the Ctrl. However, it's definitely broken, as it sometimes zooms the page even when you're typing into a text area - for example on Google Plus. (Also, on some pages like G+, using Backspace in a text area actually takes you on a previous page - not so convenient ;) )

And the private browsing function will surely come - if you right click on a link now, you can already see an option to "open in incognito window". It just doesn't work in this preview build.

Typing numbers in text boxes sometimes zooms or jumps to another tab (or both) as well.

  • You are right, without Ctrl it works. Zoom in and out works, but reset?

The problem with this approach is that its broken, you need a shortcut activation key. Let me make an example. If I want to zoom this while I write or have my cursor inside a form field like this forum box, and hit + it will actually write the key in the post +++++ you see? Its not zooming but typing.

This means I would have to click outside this comment box somewhere in the browser and then press + which is annoying. This is why its done with Ctrl + in other browsers. I don't want to take my hand off the keyboard to zoom in/out which I would need to do with this approach. So its broken. Its should be with the Ctrl key like in other browsers.

I did also noticed a bug which is more nasty.

Ctrl Tab does not correctly change/cycle from tab to tab, it sometimes goes to another tab back and forwards without any apparent reason, in particular if you do it fast enough. It seems to be related to how the UI is build, because while the browsers works fine in my system, its a big lagging, and some other users in slower systems say its slow. Ctrl Tab and fast switching tabs you will surely notice tons of lagging in the software. Opening new tabs seems to lag a bit as well but nothing unacceptable.

I'm starting to wonder if they made the right decision which choosing what ever technology they did for building the wrapper. But like you said, its a technical preview, I have real hope things will improve.

I was just testing the bookmarks and speed dials and they are amazingly well build.

  • @Ayespy:

Typing numbers in text boxes sometimes zooms or jumps to another tab (or both) as well.

And it will cause that, because the browser has no idea if you are typing the key or want to trigger the zoom feature. This is why like I said in my previous post it has to be activated with another key and this is normally Ctrl in most browsers.

Its a bug if you ask me. + or - alone should type the key not be a shortcut by its own.

  • terere: You didn't need to explain to me that it is broken, I've already agreed/stated it is :) It's just that you said "there's no shortcut for zooming", so I've mentioned one way you can currently use keyboard for zooming. Yes, it's quite broken and I'm pretty sure this is not at all how it's meant to work, but for now, this is the only way to zoom using keyboard.

  • This is a very promising browser that I will follow closely. I have a strong faith in these people(and the team).

I like that there is an "Opera style" panel that offers Downloads, Notes etc. What I would like to see here is Links, just like Opera 12 have, and, of course, the option to filter all the links on the active page.

I hope this will be implemented as well.

  • All I want really is tab hibernation and load on demand.

  • Hello,

Vivaldi is indeed promising! I have high hopes, as a "refugee" from the Presto-Opera land :-)

    15. Add tab-stacking for tab-bar in vertical mode.
    16. Add option to disable tab preview when using the tab-bar vertically (display only the title like in horizontal mode).

Yes, please! In addition, when the vertial-mode tab-bar is on the left-hand side of the window, I'd like the page preview displayed to the right of the tab on mouse hover, not to obscure the tabs below or above it.

The vertical tab-bar is very useful, because I often maximize the browser and my monitor is much wider than it's tall so that there is huge waste in the screen real estate on the left- and right-hand sides.

    Ryo
