Fonts very narrow after update to Windows 10 Build 14316

  • I just updated my system running Vivaldi 1.0.435.29 to the latest Windows 10 Fast Ring preview (Build 14316), and strangely within Vivaldi, now all my fonts are highly squished horizontally. The same version of Vivaldi was displaying fonts normally before the Windows 10 update, and as far as I can tell so far, this problem seems to be localized to Vivaldi, as other programs are displaying normally. Is this happening to anyone else? This problem isn't just in page renderings. This includes the tab titles, the address bar, the Vivaldi settings page, Google Hangouts popup windows, etc. Changing the default font for Sans Serif in Vivaldi settings does change the font, but things are still squished horizontally in the new font. A few image samples: Vivaldi on the left, Chrome on the right. Notice the bold heading widths. They used to be identical in both browsers. http://i.imgur.com/4aFFJAD.png My font settings. http://i.imgur.com/7qmpJZq.png Windows menus render correctly, but note the narrow text in tab titles and address bar. http://i.imgur.com/sQXzHZm.png Very pronounced narrow text in the about box. http://i.imgur.com/XrvDwhr.png Is anyone else noting this, and is it just localized to Vivaldi? • Yeah, that's a thing, but it's not a Vivaldi problem per se since it also happens in numerous other programs. Please vote it up here.

  • Try adjusting the font size: tools->settings->webpages, or try adjusting user interface zoom: tools->settings->appearance :)

  • It's well beyond web pages, as it includes the font in the address and search areas, tab names, etc.

Happens in Slimjet, Cent, and even in Steam, though I don't have that.

  • Then I'm guessing it's probably an issue with your computer….

  • Yes, once I saw it happening in multiple programs, there was no doubt it was because of the new Win10 build. And once I saw multiple reports of it, I knew it wasn't just here.

It is a problem of Windows Insider build as i can see with other programs.

  • Gotcha, sorry for the false alarm in that case. I guess I hadn't tried the right programs because I had only noticed it in Vivaldi, but I will flag this one as "not Vivaldi's problem" in that case.

    Thanks all.

  • As seen in my basic test (attached), Vivaldi after update to 14316 just seems to render all fonts alike, and using an ugly narrow font for it as well (The other browser in the screenshot is Chromium). Even if it may not directly be Vivaldi's fault, I would say it's very much Vivaldi's problem, as I, along with probably most other users, will not be using a browser that cannot render fonts. Possibly Microsoft will get on it, since it also involves Steam, but I doubt they would if it was only "fringe software". Also it's still likely they'll tell developers that if this update changed your fonts you're doing it wrong. Since Chromium renders just fine I'd say it's likely something Vivaldi has done (or failed to do) on top of this.

  • I'm having the same problem here. The fonts are just too ugly to deal with so I went back to Chrome for the moment. :(

That Windows version is a insider tester version, not a release. It may have bug which has to be fixed by Microsoft later.

Sorry to say: we cant test internally all developer/beta versions of Windows and other operating systems. That binds to much resources for browser development.
May be some private users may test if they have time.

  • Unfortunately, 14328 doesn't help.

considering this problem occurs since two subsequent Windows builds, but only in very few programs, you might consider looking at it before these builds are pushed to the stable branch, and not after.

It's just one subsequent build (14328), but I was thinking along those lines, too, especially considering that MS hasn't acknowledged the issue. Odds are that it'll just magically be fixed in a later build, but what if it actually is a deliberate change of some kind and it's here to stay?

Has anyone looked into other communities, like Steam, to see if any devs have commented?

The stable branch is due to get this in 2-3 months.

  • 14332: no

  • I'm always on the latest fast build ring, since before Win 10 was released

    No problem with fonts here.

Likely you have just to rename your profile to start with vivaldi installation.

  • It's more than Vivaldi and more than just me.

  • I see the same problem with latest insider build, fast ring. The resolution looks off.
