A few updates before the weekend – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2490.3
-
@ayespy Working again this morning.
-
@pesala Well, I suppose that's a mercy.
-
It took me a while to figure out what this ugly white dot was doing on my screen.
I hope the developers can come up with a more attractive solution to muting tabs in a tab stack.
-
Ctrl+D still not working on Windows. Is this acknowledged?
-
@killchain It is working fine here. Where is it broken for you? On every site, or just some?

@pesala said in A few updates before the weekend – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2490.3:

Seems to be everywhere, and it might be Windows-specific, as strange as it might be. Applies to this and the previous snapshot. The shortcut itself doesn't seem to matter - assigning another one doesn't work. Clicking the bookmark icon in the address field shows the dialogue with nothing filled in (e.g. no name, no URL, nothing) - and it shows right away instead of first saying "Bookmark added" inline and showing the dialogue on second click like normally. The bookmark icon problem leads me into thinking that something with the bookmark creation flow is broken (rather than something with the shortcuts).
-
@killchain All that works here [Linux]. I know you know this but i have to ask anyway ... does that misbehaviour also happen in a clean/test profile?
-
@guigirl: I thought about that, but I haven't tried yet; I'll test that and report.
Edit: just tested with a new profile and it seems fine. So this means that there is something wrong with my bookmarks...
Edit 2: I exported my bookmarks as HTML, deleted them all from Vivaldi and was ready to re-import them when actually Sync brought them back without interaction from me, and everything seems to work now. What's even nicer is that the Bookmarks file that used to be about 20 MB is now less than 2 (caching thumbnails as base64 within it seems to be what causes that; maybe there's a reason for them not to be separate files, I don't know - and I'd be happy if some of the devs would shine light on this). I kept the file from before and I'll try to compare it with the current one (I'm trying to see what's different besides the thumbnails).

Update Error from 2488.3 to 2490.3
I'm running into the following error when I try to update from 2488.3 to 2490.3:
"Installation failed due to unspecified error. If Vivaldi is currently running, please close it and try again."
Vivaldi is not running (checked with task manager).
This is the install log which mentions 2482.13 which was the one prior:

I found a work-around. I copied the following folder from my nightly backup
C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\4.4.2482.13
to my current system (same location) and ran the update again and it completed.
-
I see that this issue is theme related.
I submitted a bug report with my theme attached.
(VB-84525) Ugly White Dot on Tab Stack with Sound Playing
The white circle is supposed to enclose the speaker icon, but it does not.
-
I'd like to see this improvement added to the new theming options: the ability to make it so that when using a bottom tab bar I could make the top part with the menus and address bar and all that transparent, so that the background would be used in pretty much all places except for the active tab.
-
I made an adjustment to the background colour of my theme so that the loudspeaker icon now displays OK.
-
@rhk I had the same thing happen once a few weeks ago (stable version IIRC). I also eventually fixed it by doing some restore from backup, just like you!
I'm guessing it has something to do with a flag in the registry mis-matching "current version" with files on the disk - in my case the PC coincidentally crashed just when I was installing the new version.
No comment on the forum when I mentioned it, but this is a pretty nasty bug (can't install or uninstall any more!) so I do hope it gets taken seriously if others are being affected.
-
@mossman Hi, In my case, it happened when updating from 2482.13 which was announced by Vivaldi with an update notification to 2488.3 and as soon as Vivaldi reopened after that update, a new update notification to 2490.3 came up which I started. That's when the error occurred.
Besides the update installer problem, I think Vivaldi should not offer an update to a superseded version if a newer one is already available. In my case, I was on 2482.13 when 2490.3 was already out but it updated to 2388.3 first.

I was wondering whether it would be helpful to report minor and major glitches in the translation panel. So far, "Automatic Detection" doesn't work: You have to explicitly specify both languages. Chinese language doesn't work (The "Translate" button remains grayed out). Japanese punctuations (こんにちは。) stays in the English translation (Hello。).
I'm not complaining. I'm just wondering whether the devs want these reports. Maybe all these are known and we have only to wait a bit.
-
@ryofurue Have you tried automatic detection with more than 30 words? That seems to be the lower limit at present.
-
@ayespy What do we do for the many occasions when our target comprises fewer words, maybe only a few?
Ans. = DeepL?
-
@guigirl That's up to the user. I wish we had a more elegant solution but, for the moment, we don't. A language decoder in Chromium does the detecting and for now, Vivaldi has to use that mechanism.
-
@ayespy: Thanks. I confirm that pasting longer text triggers auto detection.
So, I understand the inability to detect the language with shorter text is due to Chrome.
