Vivaldi cannot use Temp folder?
-
Make I some mistake during setting Vivaldi? Because every file that I want Open, not Save, just Open, is saved to sets download directory and then Open. I think should be possibility to download files, that I want Open, to some temporary files folder. And this folder I clean time by time - myself. For example: At work I set download folder and use it for really downloaded files. But also I work with many files that I want only Open (and file will be opened in default program) - files are downloaded on background and somewhen I clean this Temp folder. Same as home, I don't want store just opened files in Download folder, its a bloody mess.

This is still very annoying on Vivaldi 5.3.2679.70 (Stable channel) (64-bit).
I have Downloads setting "Save Files to Default Location Without Asking" disabled.
Steps:
- Google search for "test type:pdf"
- click a PDF link, choose "Save as...", save to desktop
- click another PDF link, choose "Open"
- close PDF viewer
Expected: Second PDF is saved to %TEMP%, maybe deleted after user closes PDF viewer.
Actual: Second PDF is permanently and silently saved to
- configured Download Location if "Update Default Location When Choosing Save as Location" is disabled,
- (even worse:) most recently used folder (here: desktop) if "Update Default Location When Choosing Save as Location" is enabled.

@k78d Try Settings, Webpages:
Enable Internal PDF ViewerThe PDF file will be saved in a temporary folder.

@Pesala That is true and works.
However, it only works with PDF links within websites or search results.
It doesn't work with PDF attachments in mails in mail client so far. That's why I made a feature request for it. Please upvote it to have that feature soon!

I think it's Chromium base code handling this, and AFAIK it behaves the same in all Chromium-based browsers. So major code changes will be needed to change this behaviour I'm afraid.

Save Opened Files in Temporary Folder is one of the top feature requests, but as Pathduck said, it depends on Chromium code, so may not be done by the Vivaldi Team. The request is not even tagged as In Progress or Pipeline. At least, it ought to be tagged as Nice to Have.

@Dancer18 You can present how many good ideas you want. Whether they ever get implemented is up to the Vivaldi team
Nobody's disagreeing with you, just saying it might take a while... -
@Pathduck Yeah sure. I only argued to the question if only the Chromium makers can change that, or not yet the Vivaldi team.

@Pesala Thanks. Actually, I only disabled it as an attempted workaround for this issue. Even with the internal PDF viewer enabled, some PDF links prompt with "Open", "Save as..." etc., and then save even if I choose open (in internal viewer). (In my case, most often it's a weird button in SAP HR not recognizable as a PDF link, but resolving to a entity.pdf on click.) But that's already discussed in https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24240/save-opened-files-in-temporary-folder/19 .
So as a workaround, I'm going to set the download folder to a temp folder, disable "Update Default Location When Choosing Save as Location", and live with it. For intended downloads, I use "Save as..." anyway.
