Have over 1000 tabs is this browser for me?
-
Hey,
I read a ton. I have easily over 1000 tabs. I Am looking for a practical browser which doesn't require to install crappy addons and is suitable for this purpose. I Am on Windows 10...
I need especially:
- reorder windows and rename their titles on the taskbar (persistent)
- intelligent session and tab management
- cltr+f when adding bookmarks
- custom hotkeys
- cycling between past windows
- global ctrl+f for searching across all tabs in all windows!
- text highlighter (persistent)
- music button would be nice to check on which sites sound is being played
It is information age and I just don't get how any browsers don't already include these...
Thanks!

@empleat , 1000 tabs open? Why? Well, in Vivaldi you can do it with hibernate, group, tab stacking and tree tab function it has.
Vivaldi don't has a highlighter, but you can select the text and save as note, it save the text and the URL of the corresponding page, which open this page with the selected text, clicking on this note.
For bookmark, like for other functions you can asign the keys (or mouse gestures) you want, even for command chains. -

I never had so many, but AFAIK there is some difference between 10 & 1000 wrt performance & UX.

IMO your best option is to find a good AO or (if it doesn’t exist) write one yourself.
I need especially:

nah
- intelligent session and tab management
depends on what you consider intelligent (& even if dumb were enough for you, the current state of V may be disappointing)
- cltr+f when adding bookmarks
ctrl-f as in find the relevant folder by its name? (in that case, yes)
- custom hotkeys
you can change (most) hotkeys, is this what you mean?
- cycling between past windows
as in, alt-tab but only within the browser? I don’t think V has this
- global ctrl+f for searching across all tabs in all windows!
only w/in one window, AFAIK
- text highlighter (persistent)
nah, AFAIK
- music button would be nice to check on which sites sound is being played
nah
(The answers all really cover only V built-in functionality.)
It is information age and I just don't get how any browsers don't already include these...
- the set is different for everyone – look, I need
- properly functioning keyboard navigation
- moar configuration than most browsers offer (like writing a browser from scratch, except it shouldn’t take so much work)
- cookie et al management that doesn’t suck
- good enough security
- in total you get a whole lot of things that should’ve been included long ago
- every single of them takes some work & time
- some × a whole lot is way too much

@potmeklecbohdan
Thanks for answers... Unfortunately I need all these points badly! I engage in philosophy I simply need hundreds of tabs open at the same time for reference etc. I now use Firefox with some addons, there isn't probably good enough browser for my needs which is shame! And addons can't fix every point from my list of issues sadly! Even I would use them at this point, if I could...
It is information age so... and even work today can require work with over a hundred of tabs, so it is not really fixable by any other way! UI could be so much better, this couple of practical things, which could be easily implemented would help so much and reduced pain! I don't understand why these things are not apparent to devs, but they are always apparent to users: https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/tab-overload
It is like that with programs and games...

@empleat , I think that thera no other browser with better tab handling as Vivaldi, apart that it permit you to viev several pages at once in split screen. With all its features, Vivaldit will be the best tool you can find for your work.
-
@empleat I think sessions already solve tab overload by organising your work into groups of tabs that can be reopened when needed, so there is no need to have thousands or even hundreds of tabs open at the same time.
Session management needs some improvements to make them easier to update, and there are many feature requests for sessions.
All I need is to be able to List Existing Sessions on Save Session so that I can easily update them. A Sessions Panel is the top feature request. It would make it manage, rename, and search sessions.
I also engage in philosophy, and believe that contentment is the greatest treasure.
-
@catweazle That would depend on other things, I need minimally addon for renaming window titles!
@Pesala problem is when I have creative outburts I can get easily to 1000 tabs and I keep them for reference, because I see 20 things and from each of them another 20 things and another, I work with too much information at the same time. I use session to save it for later tho.
@guigirl LOL I would have to me millionaire to create my own browser
Problem is no addon can solve problem with reordering windows on the taskbar supposedly! And even no third party program can do that, as info about positions of window is saved in browser. That is so order of windows is persistent.
-
@empleat , each one works in a different way, more or less in a rational way and I think that no browser or addon can adapt 100% to all the particularities, but I think that Vivaldi can be quite close to all your needs. I think you can even do it completely, simply by making your workflow in a somewhat more orderly way, taking advantage of the tools available it has.
If you can't do it with Vivaldi, you won't be able to do it with any of the other existing browsers. -

reordering windows on the taskbar
I thought you could do so OOTB in windoze, via drag&drop, though I can’t check this. & I don’t know if this reordering is respected by the browser after a restart

I don’t think so – unless you want to make it from nothing. The browser engines are mostly easy enough to be reused in other browsers, and there are projects that simplify it even more (basically, browsers where you can freely replace any component).

ely replace any component)
Firstly thanks for answer! Interesting I can check this in future.
I will try Vivaldi later, if after reordering windows on the taskbar, if it will remember that. It will be tough to set-up everything again...

Windows 10 doesn't allow re-ordering of windows that belong to the same application. Which is extremely frustrating...
(All windows from the same application kinda "stick" together in the task bar, so if you drag one they will move together.)
-
@komposten There is 7+ taskbar for that or something problem is persistence, I will have to test if Vivaldi windows would persist in that order, if reordered.
Microsoft are just scrubs... And Firefox is doing random nonsense lately, they have also bug, which causes order of window to change randomly at start OMEGALUL... And still didn't update UI!!! Tab UI didn't really change since IE6... https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/tab-overload
It is almost like Microsoft devs don't use Windows and Firefox devs don't use Firefox. Because I don't know how is it possible that these things are always most apparent to users, but not to devs themselves, it is a rule!
-
I will leave Firefox, because performance started to be piss poor...
Does anyone have experience with 1000 tabs and performance in Vivaldi?
I used to have even 3000 and not, because I Am bad at closing tabs! I read too much!I expect my tabs will get to 6000~
Thanks!
-
For me Vivaldi with 10-15 tabs open works well
-
@guigirl said in Have over 1000 tabs is this browser for me?:
I'm afraid i simply can't respect anyone who uses less than Avogadroan tabs.
WUT?

@empleat I think you should start by getting familiar with the Window Panel and the Quick Commands, both of which can help you quickly find a specific tab. You can utilize the Tab Stacking feature to organize your tabs, instead of grouping them into separate windows (tab stacks can be renamed).
Don't forget to check out the Session Management and other Tab Features. Hope this helps. -
I Am talking about the web browser, how is this related to Windows? Finding tabs through windows, why would anyone do that instead it is quicker in browser. BTW there is no program that allows you to re-order windows on the taskbar (so they are persistent). Because of order of windows is saved in a browser!
Besides my question was about performance, I guess I will have to test it manually anyways. Because is low chance anyone visiting these forums has 1000+ tabs...
-
@empleat @pafflick is talking about windows, not Windows.
The windows panel lists all of the tabs open in the current window. The search field at the top of the window panel lets you search them by page title. They can also be sorted in different ways using the dropdown.
-
That's is not related to what was I asking...
