Unable To Remove ALL History?
-
Why when I clean out my history in Vivaldi, I'm still able to access all my history via the drop down menu in the task bar?
-
Chrome doesn't clean history either.
I just started with Vivaldi and that's how I found out my histroy from years ago still imported, while Chrome was set to delete after 30 days…
The same goes for Safari, unless you immediately quit the browser after issuing the command. Safari will happily rebuild it's database and include everything you've just deleted.
That makes you wonder if this is a bug, or a feature...

I understand, .however the difference is if I clear the history manually in Vivaldi, or use an an extension like Click & Clean the drop down in the task bar still shows all the history, which the other browsers don't after clearing all history. Not sure why?
-
Apparently, other browsers hide it and Vivaldi doesn't?

I wasn't able to reproduce this issue with Vivaldi's latest stable version (Beta 3). Which Vivaldi's version do you use? Also which Mac OS version do you have installed? Lastly, would you please share some screenshot so we can look into it?
Thanks in advance!

I just deleted history. 39.000 items were deleted in a very short time. I've only been using Vivaldi for a little over a week, so these were imported from Chrome. Sounds good…
When I type 1 character in the URL bar, Vivaldi still comes up with the suggestion to visit a site that I visited with Chrome many years ago. So, apparently, the history list isn't deleted, it's just hidden from the user. The History page is blank...
Where's that suggestion coming from, if not from the history? Or is there a separate database?
What's really annoying, is that the same behaviour in Chrome seems to work in a more refined fashion. When I type the one character, Chrome suggests the latest site visited. Vivaldi shows a site from long ago, maybe because it's sorted alphabetically?
Example: if I type a "g", Chrome gives me "google.com". Vivaldi gives me "geany.org". I can't even remember when I visited that site.
Also, "Speed dial" is showing in Histroy. Why?
When it comes to privacy, all browsers are a farce.

Unless you disable it, some suggestions now are coming from search results, not from history.
-
You are correct, they are coming form the search results! It appears there is no way to remove them. Is that correct?
-
Can't tell for sure. Have you tried turning off the prediction service at chrome://settings/search#prediction ? Or just turn off Address autocomplete in settings?
-
I have, still searches show up!
-
Hmmmmm…

The only way I found to correct the problem is to delete the Top Sites database. You can find it in
~/Library/Application support/Vivaldi/Default/
Mine was over a hundred megabyte of bloat imported from Chrome. Vivaldi also feels a bit faster, but I have also disabled animations and other stuff in the preferences.
There seems to be no function to delete Top Sites from the preferences, or with a URL from the address bar. Seems like an oversight for a privacy oriented browser, especially as this database can easily be copied and read (it's a sqlite db) and contains a lot of info about the user.
