Don’t delete forum posts

When GwenDragon deleted her account, we sadly also lost all her posts. Per the user’s choice, the forum should either:
Delete the account and avatar, but keep posts and topics
Delete the account, username, posts, and avatar, but keep topics
-
@code3 Vivaldi uses NodeBB. Not sure this granular of a choice is even available in their software.
-
@ayespy Good point. I will open a corresponding request with nodeBB.
-
@ayespy , it's sad, not only that GD has dropped out, but also very relevant posts have been lost. It is clear that with the exit of a user not all posts are important and must be maintained, but deleting them all, not only subtracts important information, it also destroys entire threads. Users having a problem and solves it thanks to GD's response, but now you only see a post with a problem and in the next one the user giving the grace to GD, without knowing why.

@code3 Vivaldi is bound by the GDPR. I’m ok with users deleting their data, they have every right to it. But I’m not ok with the deletion of third party posts in the process. This gives users the power to delete other people’s content and in a way a topic creator is holding everyone else hostage. I’ve already mentioned it before, but this is a mess up on Vivaldi’s part. We already had a topic on this issue before and they didn’t do anything. Laying the blame on nodeBB is easy, but no one is forced to use this software.
-
@luetage Yes, maybe it would require a slight change of privacy policy, but I would think that keeping only the topic title would be fine (maybe vivaldi is still required to delete even the title, if a user specifically requests it, but in that case maybe the topic could be renamed).
@luetage @Catweazle If you agree with the feature request, please upvote

@code3 It doesn’t require a change to the privacy policy at all. Nowhere does it say users wield the right and power to delete everything contained in their topics.
If you try to delete your topic right now, you won’t be able to do it. The content of your first post might disappear, but my reply won’t. The system just isn’t able to handle the situation and we’ve known this for quite some time.
-
if user terminated account a better countermeasure to identify person is removal of all(!) references to nick and external data links. some forum software of places i visited over years were able to do this.
-
@luetage after erasing user the loss of posts+threads (owned by user) was a old issue of this forum.
-
@doctorg I think I just said that.
-
https://github.com/NodeBB/NodeBB/issues/9639
However this is also a Vivaldi issue, because:
-
Vivaldi chose to use nodeBB
-
We have seen how thousands of posts can be deleted when a user leaves (and gd did not want to delete the posts, just her account, I think)
-
AND Vivaldi must set up their account system to handle deleting only what the user wants to delete, if NodeBB implements this.

No amount of upvotes will change this. They are aware of it, but haven’t gotten around to fixing it. This is not a feature request but a reheated discussion of a known deficiency/bug.

I have always believed that a user has a choice to leave a forum but the content they posted should always stay. Once posted it belongs to EVERYONE including the forum.

@MegiaMogul read https://vivaldi.com/privacy/community-terms-of-use/
We agree to:
Please note that if you delete your data, including but not limited to your blog and its entries, photos, and emails, we will not be able to restore it for you.
The content and material you publish on our forums and blogs is yours only, and Vivaldi does not claim ownership to any of your uploads.
Termination
You can choose to end them at any time for any reason by deleting your Vivaldi account and discontinuing your use of the forum and blog services. When doing so, your data is permanently deleted from all of our servers and your username can never be re-used.
-
@doctorg Yes, they might need a slight change of policy, to allow for keeping a small amount of data like the titles of the topics you created.
