When selecting an email..

the read status remains "Unread". If an email has been selected, i.e. viewed, then the read status should be "Read".

@odebroqueville Vivaldi mail client does not automatically mark emails read, by design. Your marking them "read" is a way to "archive" them. This is an organizational tool to use when using the "unread" view as your primary mail handling point. No email leaves that view until you, personally, decide you are done with it. Then you mark it "read," and it vanishes from that view.

Yes, I finally understood that things worked differently in Vivaldi Mail than other ordinary email clients.

@odebroqueville if that helps in any way, Vivaldi distinguishes between Unseen and Unread. Unseen emails are ones that you have never opened and are displayed as blue in the list. If you click on an unseen email, after a second or so (not instantly) Vivaldi will remove the Unseen flag and the message turns black in the list.
There is another thread about this feature wish with some more discussion if you are interested.
