Sudden failure to launch
-
Activity Monitor shows no Vivaldi processes while it is not open/launched. It's pretty difficult to see what is what when V is trying to launch before it crashes. Again, it reaches the point where previous windows have opened and tabs are starting to load and then blips out / crashes. The app no longer runs long enough for AM to be useful. Thanks for the reply.

@xyzzy Is there a way to have Vivaldi not load tabs and windows from last session? Seems like this person has one tab that is just causing a crash.

This was my thinking, as well. I don't know of a 'safe' mode or such for launching V. Only way I'm aware of to turn off the reload previous tabs feature in Settings which, of course, requires the app to be running. Perhaps I'll submit a ticket even though I can't get a crash log to generate. There may be something that can be done in the V folder in the Library or ? This kind of thing has been why I move on from browsers in the past... oh well.

The problem with downgrading is that it can cause irreparable damage to your Vivaldi profile, where all configuration files are stored. At this point, your best bet would be to start off from a clean slate.
Vivaldi stores its configuration and other working files in various subdirectories under ~/Library. For more information, see this post: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/419343
If you delete all of these files/subdirectories, it will be like Vivaldi had never been launched.
Before purging your profile, you will probably want to back up
~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi
just in case there is something in there that you would want to have saved. -
Thanks for the info link. I did not intend to downgrade as I downloaded the latest version from the website to replace what I thought was the same version on my Mac. When I dropped the app into the Applications folder I got a dialog about replacing a newer version and decided to go for it rather than keep both... then I noticed the warning on the forum page. I'm still not certain it actually downgraded but this whole situation has become a big PITA that has me motivated to move on from V. I've been annoyed by other performance problems for awhile and the inability to use extensions without being logged into a Google account (something I avoid) is a major turn off. Thanks again for the assistance.

@spybounce I don't know what extensions you use but nothing about Vivaldi should EVER require a Google login. In fact, Chrome-specific extensions are problematic because Vivaldi lacks the API keys that are required to access Google's back-end systems.
I have also never experienced any performance issues with Vivaldi that you would not encounter with other browsers. If you are decoding 4K high-bitrate videos with a software decoder, don't expect low-CPU consumption. Similarly, some sites may optimize for Safari, which can leverage underlying hardware resources on Macs that Vivaldi cannot.
I don't know what history that you have had with Vivaldi; whether you have downgraded in the past, or switched between Stable and Snapshot builds before you could install both side-by-side, or have some other unique configuration that affects Vivaldi, or done something else yourself that could have de-stabilized the browser. Vivaldi has MANY Mac users internally, so it's a well-tested platform. If you experience any performance issues on any site, report it as a bug. If the internal testers can reproduce it, such issues will be a high-priority for developers to investigate.

I run no extensions on V because it is now required to use the Google Play Store to even download them and I have to log into a Google account to download... so I just didn't. This is directly from the app so I'm uncertain what alternatives there are that don't require this.
My main performance issue is the progressive wonkiness that creeps into V the longer it has been in use. I mentioned this in my initial post as the reason I had shut down V in the first place. While this type of thing happens with other browsers the V variety is fairly unique and annoying to me. Primarily a failure to refresh sites correctly requiring another reload.
This is my first major problem with V but it does seem to be a corker. I have always been running just the latest stable updates that the app notifies me about and have never downgraded until this attempt to remedy the current issue by trying a fresh version of the app, which may have been older than what I had, but am uncertain why that would be. The crash behaves exactly as before I replaced the app with the one I downloaded from the V site.
I'm not trying to denigrate V. I had been reasonably happy with it until this major issue occurred. There are many features I like about it esp. the advanced tab handling. There are however many other browser choices and I am starting to feel like whatever is going on now is not going to be resolved without starting from scratch, so I might just try another option.
Best regards and many thanks for your helpful replies.

@spybounce
For the ordinary extensions, you use the Chrome Web Store and you do not need to login to anything to get them. -
My recollection was there was an update to V that changed the way it handled extensions and the old ones wouldn't run anymore. I wasn't running many but one I wanted was 'Save to Pocket'. I followed the new instructions to get it and I was taken to the Google Play Store which wouldn't let me do anything before logging in with a Google account. That was the end of that story for me. This has become moot as my V remains dead and I have lost enthusiasm to spend more time/energy trying to remedy the fatal issue. Thanks for the reply.

Google Play Store would be on Android not on macOS and the Chrome Web Store you don't need to sign in to grab extensions
