Solved Update failure from menu - Cannot connect to downloads.vivaldi.com:443
-
Hello!
So I've had this problem for a while but I couldn't tell you how long ago it started. I've been updating Vivaldi manually since then without any problems. The problem only occurs when I either use the notifier for auto-update or I use the menu option for Check for Updates. If an update is available it almost immediately brings up this error message:
Update Error!
An error occurred while downloading update files. Please check your internet connection and try again later.
If the error persists, please report it and include the following details:
Cannot connect to downloads.vivaldi.com:443• I can ping downloads.vivaldi.com with a response time of 20ms.
• Name resolution is working; I get an IP of 151.139.236.233.
• I do not have any anti-virus or anti-spyware background processes running. (Ever, unless I manually run an anti-spyware sweep.)
• Running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1I've tried the following with no change:
• Disabling each extension one by one
• Disabling all extensions at once
• Disabling the Windows firewallNot the biggest problem in the world since I can still updates but I'd love to get the updater working, especially with the notifier so I can always make sure the browser is up to date.
Any ideas? Ones that don't involve a young priest and an old priest if we can help it. My machine's a bit old and I don't think it could handle the pea soup.

@pathduck
Aw man, I was really looking forward to the whole goat thing but looks like we're going to need a priest after all because I need to make a confession.I saw that post and said to myself, "nahhh, that's a different error message and I never uninstalled IE."
But I enabled TLS 1.0 and 1.2 and lo and behold I'm up to date.
I searched up and down for the specific error and couldn't come up with anything but that one post and it was the answer and I ignored it. It turns out that what I was looking for was under my nose... all along.
And something about the friends I made along the way.
Maybe next time we can get into the Voodoo stuff; I was really looking forward to it and apologies to the goat wrangler who's probably really disappointed right about now.
Well thank you very much and I'm sorry I spent so much time to waste yours. Hope you all have a great day!

@ganaern Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
Please see this related thread, I suspect you have the same issue:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/61564/can-t-update-vivaldi-due-to-internet-connection-error-12031Any ideas? Ones that don't involve a young priest and an old priest if we can help it.
Oh no, no priests involved. But sometimes some Voodoo magic is needed, and sacrificing a young goat with a silver-handled knife over the keyboard while burning black candles.

@gwen-dragon "But I enabled TLS 1.0 and 1.2 and lo and behold I'm up to date."
-
@gwen-dragon Probably through the Internet Options setting:
https://warwick.ac.uk/services/its/servicessupport/web/sign-on/help/tls1-eol/ie/Good call for thinking of checking TLS version
It's important to note that the updater process uses Windows internet components (
wininet.dll
etc, basically old IE code) for downloading, and not Vivaldi itself. -
@gwen-dragon
Sorry, I should have made that clearer that it was Vivaldi that was up to date and not the options. Thanks again for your help! -
Hi, since today's snapshot (2722.3) I have the same error:
Update Error!
An error occurred while downloading update files. Please check your internet connection and try again later.
If the error persists, please report it and include the following details:
Cannot connect to downloads.vivaldi.com:443I haven't changed anything in the system since the last update that worked.
I already had all the TLS options turned on, so I just installed IE from the Win Features, but didn't help.
Any idea what has changed in the update system since the last shapshot? Win 7 here. -
@Gregor Hi, looks like they updated the cert a couple days ago. When using an outdated and no longer supported OS you need to remember to keep the OS certificate store update regularly.
-
@Gregor You should update your certificates!

@Gregor The server certifcate was updated June 29, 2022.

@DoctorG I know

Your confession is acknowledged.

Updating cert didn't help. I installed all active certificates from this site https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/, then restarted the pc.
Despite this those sites works for me:
https://valid-isrgrootx1.letsencrypt.org/
https://valid-isrgrootx2.letsencrypt.org/Maybe downloads.vivaldi.com uses some other certificates?
I don't know what could be the reason, but I assume maybe one is missing from the list in the "Third Party Root Certification Authorities" folder from certmgr.msc? -
@Gregor Not all sites use Letsencrypt
You can access these certs by going to the site (choose Advanced... Proceed) and clicking Site Info then Certificate.
https://downloads.vivaldi.com/lists/vivaldi/partners-current.txtI guess you could export/import directly from there. But better to get your OS to update the root certs properly. Read:
I can't help more than that, I've never done it.
-
@Gregor Is TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 activated in Windows → Internet Settings → Advanced → Security?

All TLS enabled, but I have no 1.3, only 1.0, 1.1, 1.2.

@Gregor Ah, your AV captures your traffic using Vivaldi, so it uses a different certificate. The Vivaldi Update process uses your OS trust store directly.
You will need to figure out another way to get the certificates into the trust store.
And I have disabled Windows Update.
Why have you done this?
Even if Win7 is no longer supported, MS does update some things for critical security, like root certificates... -

I don't get it, I just did that. Which certificates do you mean and where is this trust store?
I deleted all kaspersky's certificates from the certmgr.msc and got this:
but it didn't help for browser udpate.Btw, when I enable Use SSL 2.0 in Windows/Internet Settings/Advanced/Security I get this error instead

I deleted all kaspersky's certificates from the certmgr.msc and got this:
Not sure if it's a good idea to delete those certificates, as those are used by the AV proxy to decrypt and inspect your browser traffic for malware.
But looks like you have the certs installed OK.
For error 12030 see:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/winhttp/error-messagesMy guess though is that your AV terminates your connection. Try temporarily disabling the AV.
