Remove message from Inbox upon Replying

Why is it that when I reply to an email message, the reply goes into the Sent folder; but the original message still stays in the Inbox?
I think that when we reply to an email, the reply should go to the Sent folder & the original message should be removed from the Inbox.
If at 1st you don't succeed, so much for skydiving?

@arachnid I can see that that would save one step in most cases, but it is rather rude to delete received emails without even asking. Perhaps the user wants to reply to it again later?
It is my habit to clean up all email that I have dealt with, but I would prefer delete to be done manually, and Shift+Delete to delete permanently without moving mail (or notes/bookmarks) to trash.

I don't mean to delete the email, just move the whole conversation to the Sent folder.
