Bring back settings from old window background image
-
VB-83783
3.8 made some changes to how themes work, and it unfortunately meant the removal of window background images in favour of using the background image that was already used in the speed dial page.
Old window background image setting from appearance
Ideally, I would like to be able to set a separate image for the tab bar again, but more importantly, I want the old color blending back.
What bothers me most about this change was that we can no longer make the window accent color blend with the image. We can make it either transparent, or opaque. Neither of those appeal to how i want my themes to look.

Yes, please bring this feature back! Using a window background image really completed the experience for me. Once I updated to the new version and saw the change, I instantly downloaded the previous version. The new look of the interface in 3.8 is fantastic, but I would rather just never update again if I had to choose between having the window background image or not. Taking away this feature really hurts what makes Vivaldi special, the ability to customize almost anything you would ever want to. Please, developers, give this feature back to us!
-
I still don't understand why they'd remove a feature and, in turn, give us less customization.
Doesn't that defeat the point of Vivaldi?
-
I just created an account to create a post about this - looks like I'm not the only one please give this back! It was an awesome distinguishing feature and it looked awesome. I miss this!

I think I'm in the right spot. Mods, please move this if I'm not where I'm supposed to be....
When I made the big switch from Chrome to Vivaldi (over a year ago?)... one thing I really missed was my LavaChrome theme (by ZigBoom Designs). So, a couple guys here on the forum helped me to cobble together a design that looked almost identical to the LavaChrome (I contacted ZigBoom, who gave his blessing).
Before a Vivaldi Update (I don't remember which one), I lost the ability to make my Vivaldi look like this design. I really miss this and was curious: Why oh why, did they take away the ability to do this? And since "Themes" don't work from the Chrome Store, it was our only way to customize our Vivaldi browser.
I'm learning to live with just having a non-descript bar at the top. I'm able to get the background image on the StartPage, but that doesn't work like it used to either. Hard to explain, but the background image (the round lava sphere) no longer 'tracks' when you change the size of the screen. The image used to always center itself, no matter what; now the image stays "fixed" and doesn't move. So, the icons look funny now, because they're not centered anymore. Why did they change that too?
Thanks for listening to me today; I appreciate your time.

@wolfee You can change the Image Position on the Start Page from Settings, Themes. Choose from:
- Stretch to Fit
- Repeat
- Cetnre
-
@pesala; Thank you; I'm very aware of that.
If I "Stretch to Fit" the image becomes distorted, no longer a perfect sphere.
If I "Repeat", it chops up the sphere into smaller spheres, and then lines them up by the dozen.
Centre is the ONLY way it will work. And as long as I keep my Left panel closed, all the icons stay centered, but if I open the Bookmarks panel, the "image stays fixed" and the little Icons become off-center. Before the Update, if you opened/moved the Left panel, the image would "track" accordingly. It doesn't do that anymore.
But I thank you for your kind Reply just the same and I appreciate the help.

@wolfee
Hi, It is may not what you meant but you can check Floating Panel in Panel settings.
Or was this the default setting, I cant remember.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin
Thank you for your kind Reply; No, the Floaties don't help...
I appreciate your time today.To give everyone a better picture of what I'm talking about; this is a perfectly centered sphere;
No Bookmarks tab open....
With Bookmark tabs open:

@wolfee
No problem, very boring TV program anyway.
I still not fully understand.
The background image always stay at place but the speed dial icons does not.
I use the panel toggle and this move the icons ~30 pixel to the right.
You use the panel bar, icons move 100 pixel and if you open a panel it move 100 + width of the panel.
I guess you want the speed dial icons move at all.
This work if you close the panel bar and set floating but then you have to use F4 to open the panel, for example.This is not my real background image, hehe.
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin
Thank you so much for your Reply.The point I'm trying to make is that it USED TO WORK. The image (the lava-sphere) USED TO move with the icons, but now it doesn't.
But if your background isn't a sphere of some sort, I guess it doesn't really matter, but as you can see (pictures above), it really sticks out now.
Thank you so much for your input. I tried F4 but all it does is make the entire Left-panel disappear (and the image is still "fixed"). I like having the Bookmarks panel open at ALL times. I use those bookmarks all the time. I like having them within easy reach. I'm more upset about not being able to customize the top bar anymore.
Thank you for your time. I'm afraid my problem is hopeless. I just don't understand why they gave us such wonderful customization features and then yank them away.
I wish we could just use Themes from the Chrome Store. But I've tried, LavaChrome doesn't work. It says it is "Added" but you can't see it.
Anyway, thanks for your time!!

@wolfee
Ah, now I understand!
You want the background move with the speed dials and I thought you donΒ΄t want the speed dials move.
If it work at some time it is a regression and you can report it to the bug tracker.
May be the report get rejected as "By design"
but then you can make a feature request.Cheers, mib

Thanks, mib. Cheers! -

I like how they ignored the original meaning of this thread and solved some other guy's completely unrelated problem.
Why are they so insistent on not letting us have our window be a separate image from the speed dial? -
@deltaphoxtrot Well...actually is not so unrelated. The user asked for help and thread moving if the place wasn't correct. Also, is a good example of customized UIs which were "broken" from the feature changes which both apply for anyone which placed a background on a window (horizontal tabs) or the Tab Bar (vertical tabs). Or used the blend feature.
I fear such feature won't come back soon, but I hope so -
I really wish this topic got more attention. I downloaded Vivaldi because of the customization and look that this browser affords. Having a separate window background image than what I have in use for the speed dial page is something I cannot give up. I will stay on version 3.7.2218.58 forever if I have to, but that means I now lose access to Vivaldi's sync tool and any new features coming out. I also get to deal with all the same bugs, though thankfully, the experience on this version has been solid. Every once in a while, I update a separate install of the Vivaldi Snapshot, and it sucks to see what is new and what features have not been added back. Why completely launch a new customization system that does not keep the incremental features that made the first system so awesome in the first place? Don't get me wrong, what is being added is stellar, but I miss one of the things that made Vivaldi special to me. It's disappointing, honestly.

The latest snapshot has made a change so that the window color can blend with a transparent tab bar!
Unfortunately, that only happens when both "Accent from Page" and "Accent on Window" are enabled... so the old "Blend Window Accent Color with Image" is not back just yet.
No sign for a separate optional image for the tab bar yet.
