How secure are my data on a Windows 10 device?
-
Hello,
currently I am running four operation systems including freeBSD and I am asking myself how secure are my browser data (passwords, bookmarks, history etc.) on a standard password protected win 10 unencrypted hard drive. Can someone get my data if say my computer gets stolen? I know that win10 at least asks me for my password to display the saved passwords, which ubuntu does not.

@Namal
If one can sit in front of your PC the security is 0%, with encrypted file system 99.99%.
You can simply delete your Windows login password with a boot disk/USB image.
If you start Windows the password entry is empty.
Some admins block this in the system BIOS and set a BIOS password.
I am not sure what happen if you only have the HDD, I don´t need this for some time, may be I am a bit outdated.Cheers, mib

Hi,
Bios Pass is very good, you'll need to disassemble the computer to short circuit if I recall.
There are also some small switches, remove the battery isn't enough if not wrong.But the most you can do is to save the Pass on a Password Manager.
On Browser leave the essentials but not sensitive, bank, big shopping...Browser Login Data is encrypted by SID, so despite the HDD is plugged in an external case, and used a soft to dump, it gets reset.
Check MySecurityExplode or NirSoft, Chrome Passwords.

Didn't knew about Linux.

But...
Since the Chr Edge Terms of Use, the Data seems already stolen.

@Namal , the passwords stored in Windows are encrypted, not so in Linux. You can test it in Vivaldi in the settings > Privacy >Passwords and click on the eye icon to show the password. To do this you must enter the PIN/Password of Windows in a Pop-Up.

@Catweazle So, Windows is better then Linux on security? At least, in this one area?
-
@Eggcorn , yes, in this point, but not so in others questions, but permit to change this inthe (some hidden) settings, or by use an app to do this.
In Windows10 there a lot of sniffers an telemetries, but MS don't need to sell userdata to make money, like Google, they make money with their not cheap software. They colect userdata in own comercial interest. -
@Eggcorn
Hi again, most Linux systems use Keyring or similiar to encrypt your passwords but many user disable it at first start.
I cant remember if you can even start a Chromium browser without keyring.Cheers, mib

Hi,
If I'm not wrong, @Gwen-Dragon explained:
Access keyring
Change the pass
Leave it blank
SaveIt worked on 4/5 Mint where I did.

Hi, blank password is even better than 12345, hehe.
I use auto login for my home laptop but use keyring for passwords in the system.
Everybody can login but nobody can buy washing machines over my Amazon account.Cheers, mib

xD
I use that too, but on W7.
Mint is for testing and did the same on some of them, but don't remember for open passwords on V or others.
I'll check it.
