Security Startup feature - Password for Vivaldi Browser
-
I work at a small printing company. My computer station at work has open access for any other employee to use. However, one in particular is a nosy "not-a-nice-person". I would like to see a feature added that, once you start the browser, it requests a password. Without the password, the browser will not open. It's a security feature that a lot of programs should implement.
-
I dont know of Windows allowing the locking/passwording of programs in the same user logon.
The computer I use has a station login. Once logged in, anyone can access the programs. Its use is for the flatbed printer, which is my jurisdiction. However, anyone else can use it as well. I installed Vivaldi, and I use this browser for my social media, email (both personal and business), as well as forum searches for Illustrator, printer issues and the like.
I would like to see an implementation that would lock this particular browser behind a password wall so that my personal information is not subject to tampering.
As for your last question, I dont know of any browser that has a password on startup, which is why I was asking.
-
Yea I remember I wanted this feature bur because of OS security protection as user session base, not logical to do extra work on it.
-
Or just install Vivaldi on your USB flash drive as a portable installation, when done using it take your usb out and go. Easy
-
The restriction of the programs can be done at OS level. So I can't see a real need to reinvent the wheel.
But the password protected settings would be a nice feature to have. Especially for kiosks internet cafe and so on..
That was likely one of the most important feature that even Opera lacked.

@Gwen-Dragon said in Security Startup feature - Password for Vivaldi Browser:
That was discussed last year internally.
It was said, that the operating systems already have the ability to restrict users to programs.
I'll as the developers. But wich browser has already password protected start?
Very standard answer and you are right of course. Wish just some browser would stick out from rest of them and have this option.
Mainly have one vision to ditch all mail client software and Apps and use Vivaldi for all mail accounts.- One Vivaldi standalone installation, start password protected.
- In this browser only tabs with different mail inboxes are open. Windows notifications work too.
- Check mails, close Vivaldi and not possible to open it without password.
- As it is not used for normal surfing it can even be totally encrypted, as performance and speed are not important. Few milliseconds here or there, does not matter.
I know Windows 10 has password. But seems as MS is not protecting it any better than in XP. Open source offline boot discs still remove it and set own Admin password for few minutes.
Alternative is to encrypt whole disk, OS. But if it is older Notebook, hardware not so good solution.
Just to be clear, I am talking about all of this in regarding to Notebooks that "travel" around with owner. To have piece of mind if they are stolen, or lost. Otherways who cares how mail accounts are protected if PC stays at the home.
Maybe best solution would be to install portable, standalone, version of Vivaldi and use it via VeraCrypt ? (VeraCrypt partition mounted and Vivaldi installed in Private encrypted partition.) What do you think about it ? Not necessary installed on USB, but on one OS partition.
Give it some custom icon and you have full blooded mail client App, better exists not. -
My password manager, KeePass, offers a fully encrypted setup where it can unload critical parts (e.g. passwords) from memory after a set amount of time.
But even that is vulnerable to certain memory accesses from malicious applications which are possible due to the way the operating system works.
If you need something really super ultra secure with encryption for everything, you should consider an operating system designed for that purpose, like https://www.qubes-os.org/intro/

If someone wants to play with it here is it:
-
Install VeraCrypt portable. Simplest as any other win program, in same x86, x64 folder.
-
Configure VC dynamic container. Gave it say max 2 GB, more than enough if no surfing, except mail check, will be involved.
-
Mount partition (I use allways Z letter)
-
In the partition root (Z) install Vivaldi standalone.
-
On your PC (Desktop) make a .bat file, name it as wished.
-
One .bat file starts both VeraCrypt and encrypted Vivaldi installation. .bat file will loop and waith for letter Z to appear as mounted.
There is also automated bat code to mount VeraCrypt partition, and not to see GUI. But very stupid as Master Password is in clear text in .bat file. This way with code above VC GUI starts, and Vivaldi part waits tills you chose partition letter and type Master Password. Then it starts automatically.
Will see for some option to change Vivaldi icon(s), but seems not so easy.
Code for .bat file:
@echo off start /WAIT "VC" "D:\Program Files\VeraCrypt\VeraCrypt-x64.exe" :no rem ping for pause (2 sec) PING 0.0.0.1 -n 2 rem check drive is mounted IF EXIST Z:\ (GOTO yes) ELSE (GOTO no) :yes start "Vivaldi Mail Client" "Z:\Application\vivaldi.exe" exit
Keep original .bat file in VC installation folder. Make a shortcut to desktop, name it as wished. This way you can add some mail icon to shortcut (I have mine custom icon in the same folder where .bat original is. VC will not delete them when updates.)
If you right click Properties of shortcut and before path add cmd /c you can pin it to WIndows 10 taskbar, as native Windows mail App. -

I hope to get the same feature. need an inbuilt option. I tried extensions from chrome web store but those (lockpw free, chrome lock etc) are not well compatible with vivaldi . Now I am using it with portable installation on a folder and using mylockbox to prevent it from others. but all these are cumbersome and not a good solution as most of the locking apps are premium apps which cannot afford to buy. Please give this option which will be a great addition to the features.

@saudiqbal that is an amazing idea , you solved a big issue for me , coz i travel a lot and sometimes go to cyber cafe coz i don't own gaming laptop so i game on their pc's but don't want to leave anything on the history of the device which is why I use Vivaldi as secondary browser with encryption but dont want to leave it for them and i might forget to logout and clear my history so this is the perfect solution I didn't know you could install it on usb stick
-
I use Vivaldi on USB stick as well, and I really like it. But what if I lost the USB, and someone find it, he/she will get my browse history, and profile settings?
Now I hided Vivaldi app's folder, and I run it from a bat file, which is asking for a password, but it is not a very secure way at all.
It would be better a built in feature for Vivaldi, asking for PW before startup!

@huktamatyi
if there is more protective data at your usb stick rather than your browser it would be better, to use an encrypted filesystem. easy to use at windows only computer is bitlocker or if you need apple/linux support use veracrypt. that's way more secure than a password at start from the browser -
Thanks! It's a good idea. I've got a cryption for some data, but I am not shure, is it possible to run an application from a crypted file system?
