client side translation as in firefox
My name is Nikolay and I'm part of the Bergamot team that aims to deliver client side, secure translation inside a browser. Information about the project can be found here:
It came to our attention recently, that Vivaldi has started providing privacy focused translation service: https://www.ghacks.net/2021/03/24/vivaldi-gets-a-privacy-preserving-translation-service/
Which is still server side, just not google/microsoft server side. We are interested in helping the vivaldi dev team integrate our translation module inside the browser in order to deliver truly secure client side translation service that does not rely on the cloud.
Our machine translation core module is completely open source, highly optimised C++ code and is able to deliver impressive performance on consumer grade hardware, as long as it's run natively inside the browser (perhaps inside a sandbox). It runs on x86 linux, windows and mac. Translations are done using the CPU.
Here is the translation speed measured in terms of source words per second on various machines:
* 2012 Laptop: Vaio PCG-41412L, i5-2430M translates **1066** words per second * 2012 Desktop: iMac 27'': i7-3770 translates **3146** words per second * 2016 Desktop: i7-6700 translates **6548** words per second * 2017 Laptop: Dell XPS 9360, i7-7500U translates **3378** words per second * 2017 Laptop: Alienware 13R3, i7-7000HQ translates **5888** words per second * 2019 Desktop: AMD Ryzen 3600X translates **8791** words per second * 2019 Desktop: i7-9700 translates **8791** words per second
Please, help me reach out to the vivaldi dev team and let me know if anyone is interested in pursing this.
@XapaJIaMnu Thanks for reaching out, Nick. You will be contacted by one of our team members shortly.
