@luetage Hey… how did you find that so fast? From my manual redirects or a search?

By the way… I just got notice from Ariane, which is the Gemini client I’m using on Android, that they will halt development of the client, remove all 3rd party code from the project, rename it and release a paid version. Ariane wasn’t that great to begin with, but the other Android clients are even worse. At this point you almost have to switch to Termux and start using a command line client. Anyway, as mentioned before, in my opinion it would make sense to try and introduce a Gemini client in Vivaldi for Android first. There isn’t much competition.

              Well there might be 'soon'

@Ruarí is that to say the race is on with Vivaldi? 🙂

No traction or interest thus far (outside of my own). I think, right now, our resources are a bit stretched.

But… this is Vivaldi… never say never!

No he doesn't but he is doing it and makes a good client elsewhere. I still think this is something worth keeping your eye on.

@ruarí I don’t really like Lagrange, does too much opinionated styling in my opinion. But yeah, the Android preview looks a bit more subdued than the desktop client. Still want to see a Vivaldi implementation. I mean you, WildEnte and I are already a triumvirate of Vivaldi users in favor of a Gemini client. If that’s not a majority, I don’t know what is.

Let's do a Kickstarter initiative to implement a gemini reader into Vivaldi. I will pitch in a keg of Kölsch beer.

I've been looking into the Gemini syntax because I have a website dedicated to character stories and artwork, and I'm interested in potentially writing a Gemini version as an experiment. If Vivaldi supported the protocol that would definitely encourage me to actually give it a shot 😉

@ruarí Haven’t. But why would this be on testflight? I’d assume it only supports iOS or at least has major focus on it. I’m currently using deedum.

                                        You can try it now

                                        gemini://skyjake.fi/gemlog/2021-12_android-alpha.gmi

The purpose of these alpha builds is to get the fundamentals working correctly, i.e., the platform-agnostic UI and the SDL-provided functionality. At this point, the app is not especially great and definitely subpar as an Android citizen.

The Beta builds, when the time comes, will be about actual Android OS integration, with crucial things like native text input, file pickers, and data backup.

Oh noes, so there is no Gemini in Vivaldi, yet!

In the deprecation-of-XUL days of Firefox I've used to translate an add-on called OverbiteFF that provided the Gopher protocol support.

But we're talking about Gemini. So because our favorite browser doesn't do that, yet; then I'm using any random client I have chance to use while being on a given platform.

                                          • LR-87 for Windows (super simple to run, because it's on Microsoft Store)
                                          • asuka on anything POSIX-like CLI (tech hotheads will appreciate rust language used)
                                          • ariane ... well actually Elaho now since I've joined the cult of fruit
                                          • and last but not least Elpher which can handle both Gopher & Gemini and it runs inside Emacs, your grandpa's JDK or rather (e)LispDK

I have my own capsule of course, but it's very volatile and is kind of evil by the modern standards; so no advertisements in public ^-^
