It's about time – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2202.3
-
@g_bartsch I had the problem yesterday. I wasn’t able to reproduce it reliably. It stopped happening after I changed the ”Mute Tab Audio” setting from “Prioritize Active Tab” to “Play all Audio” in
vivaldi://settings/tabs/
. But I can’t say whether this really has any connection. You don’t have to restart btw, you can also move all tabs to new window. -
@luetage Thanks. I'll try that. Maybe the behavior will be resolved in future snapshots.
-
@espen: Thanks for confirming that I'm not imagining things (this time anyways...)
Re: using selected text for searches:
Good to know. I look forward to being able to revert to the previous implementation via a check-box in Settings.
Re: opening images in new tabs/windows:
Oh. I didn't even notice the Image sub-menu. But, why does that new sub-menu only appear on Google? On many (most? all?) web sites I still have the old "Open Image..." menu items without the new Image sub-menu?

I had to revert to stable v.3.6.2165.36.
First day all was roses, but then gradually things started getting slower.
e.g. Start-up from clicking an icon on the Windows taskbar took 10 seconds.
e.g. Right-clicking and trying to save a link/image took 10 seconds or more to initiate, then took at least 10 seconds for the Save As dialog box to open & populate.
e.g. Freezes at random actions like trying to use a recently opened tab.
Uninstalled v.3.7.2202.3, then reinstalled it. Same.
Uninstalled v.3.7.2202.3, installed v.3.6.2165.36, all was good again.
Uninstalled v.3.6.2165.36, installed v.3.7.2202.3, no good again.

Oh, crikey. In the flipping back & forth between versions, my saved password data got lost.
No problem. I saved .csv backups in January & December. I did the January one before wiping my hard drive to reinstall Windows and the .csv import worked flawlessly.
Now, I can't get Vivaldi (Stable 3.6.2165.36) to import either file.
HELP!
This is how I import .csv password files:
- Open chrome://flags/#PasswordImport
- Set to Enable
- Restart Vivaldi
- open chrome://settings/passwords
- in row with 'Saved Passwords' at the right hit the 3-dot-button to import Vivaldi passwords
(https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/35722/importing-exporting-passwords-from-a-file/3)
-
This is whacked out. For whatever reason, I can only use Saved Passwords with 2202.3 now. If I uninstall 2202.3 and install any previous version, the passwords are not there and I cannot import any of my saved .csv files.
I even used System Restore to go back to before 2202.3 was released, and I have a nicely working version of the stable release, but no passwords, nor can I import any .csv file.
Here's hoping there's an imminent release of a new shapshot that will free me from my 2202.3 prison without any of its delay peccadillos.
Such is life living on the edge of being a tester of snapshots...

@gregor: What I still miss a lot is the ability to invoke that menu with a hotkey.

[Tabs] Performance issues
Somehow performance got even worse. Moreover, in addition to browser freezing on opening a link in new tab or closing a tab, it now freezes on tab switch!
-
The intermittent inability to close tabs (horizontal, top) has necessitated bouncing V (Win10) fairly frequently and, on restart, closing the unwanted tabs I'd been stuck with. For me, this is usually most conveniently done by choosing to 'close tabs to the right' of a target tab but that can also close tabs which are second-level in a stack to the left of the target. I don't know if this is new to this snapshot as I've never previously had to clear tabs this way so often while expecting to retain all 2nd level stacked tabs. Can anyone else see this and/or have I missed a previous report somewhere?
Perhaps a misleading observation but might this be influenced by tab creation order as the 2 most recently created tabs in a stack (those 2 tabs appearing in my configuration at the right-hand end of the second level) get closed along with all the top-level tabs to the right of the target. The longer-standing 2nd-level tabs remain and are enumerated in top tab - though it seems the count isn't immediately increased when I reopen those 2 closed tabs and they are auto-restored to the 2nd level.
-
@guigirl Commiserations on getting hit by the non-closure issue. I guess I wasn't clear but inability to close tabs wasn't the point of my post (I encountered it very quickly and, in a way, was relieved to see it confirmed here) but the 'bounce V' workaround exposed for me the unexpected closing of some 2nd-level tabs along with the expected closing of tabs appearing to the right of a specific tab.
I could use sessions or some other workaround but have continued to use 'startup with last session' so a bounce brings up all those tabs which I couldn't previously close - and I then expected 'close tabs to the right' to do exactly what it claims to do but not also close some 2nd-level tabs in a stack to the left.
-
I've been hit by the non-closing tabs a couple of times as well, but unable to figure out how to reproduce it. Has anyone found a way to reproduce it?
I assume the dev team is very much aware of it though, and we'll get a fix in the next snapshot.

@gwen-dragon: You know what? Deleting Login Data & importing the .csv file worked! I swear I tried that (amongst many other things) last night, and it didn't, but now that you suggested it, it worked.
It is so nice to have a Vivaldi without pauses and freezes again.

[Tabs] Let the keyboard shortcut for opening new tab open inside a stack is open (VB-76433)
[Tabs][Regression] New tab page is slow to select/focus within second row of tabs (VB-75748)THANK YOU!
these make a huge difference in my workflow. -
Nice release and finally got a Mac M1 version for the App. However, It seems that it still got problem with video playing in this version.
-
@zeuscho Probably widevine/DRM/codecs have to be still fixed for M1 apples.

[Tabs] Not Closed sometimes
-
So far, the fix for the freeze for inactivity seems to be holding up.
But bro, what's with the new behavior. Before I could open Vivaldi pinned from my taskbar. Now it doesn't work. When it was pinned previously, it had already been from Vivaldi already open. And clicking on it worked every time. Now, I had to manually pin it from the app folder /vivaldi/application/vivaldi.exe
So it opens, but now there's an extra icon instead of just being from the main pinned icon. It's not a big deal, but I liked just having one Vivaldi app icon.
If pinned from Vivaldi already opened, it doesn't open again once Vivaldi has been closed. Pinned only works if the file target is in the main directory (dragged from the folder to taskbar). Something with a new proxy opening for the app?

Looks like there are problems with the display of images on M1 Macs. See on the NYTimes main page today.
-
Can one rearrange panels via drag and drop? The documentation suggests so, but it doesn't seem to work.
-
@thersites Hold down the shift key to D&D panel icons.
