[Bug Report] alt-selecting text opens up app menu
-
this is a bug report only
steps:
- hold alt
- click and drag to select text
- let go of keys in any order
actual result:
the app window will be open and have focusexpected result:
when alt-selecting text, the app window should not open//MODEDIT: Removed unnecessary comment

The behaviour is by design. See Settings, Keyboard:
Alt Key for Main MenuIf you disable that option, the main menu will not open.
You do not need to hold Alt to select text — just click and drag. Even better IMO, double-click to select the first word then drag to select the rest.

The behaviour is by design
it absolutely is not
disable that option
that disables opening the menu with alt completely, as such it is not a solution
You do not need to hold Alt to select text
alt-selecting is a common shared input to select text within links
while vivaldi has the horizontal/vertical override for this, people who use multiple browsers will still have muscle memory to use alt for selecting such text. thus, if alt is let go while selecting text, the menu must not open even if the option to open it with alt is selected
double-click
not helpful when selecting text in links
this is why i said this purely a bug report and i want only questions from devs. don't cause me notifications unless it is specifically for the purpose of resolving this bug as stated

The Help menu, Report a bug link used to point to the bug report wizard, but too many users made useless bug reports that only had to be closed. I guess that yours may be closed too because:
- The Alt key opening the menu is By Design
- Using the Alt key to select text is not required as it is in other browsers

I doubt it’s by design when there’s another action. Earlier it used to trigger when one pressed several modifiers & it wasn’t by design either. The problem is just that mouse click/scroll/drag isn’t considered yet.
@Mithaldu FWIW, if I release alt before the mouse button, the menu doesn’t open (but I’m on Linux so it may be different for you)

It is designed to activate on releasing the Alt key. One can still use Alt+P (for example) to open the settings dialog without triggering the menu.

@Pesala But alt-click != alt(press-release). There’s mouse interaction in the first case. The menu on alt setting should only open the menu when the alt key is pressed & released w/o any other action (i.e. alt-press, alt-release; but NOT alt-press, LMB-press, (some other mouse actions such as move/drag), LMB-release, alt-release)
Mouse actions with keyboard modifiers are quite common, btw.
