Speed dials - tiles with name

  • When I first installed Vivaldi the preinstalled tiles does have a name, like Youtube or Booking on the tiles and only this. When I add my own speed diales the tiles have the front page of the URL as a picture on the tiles. Is it possible to have only a letter or the name of the URL adress on the tiles?

  • The "name field" can be edited. Just click on the name (not the "tile") !

  • I think we are talking past each other.

I want to have tiles in speed dials like in Opera browser. Instead of picture of the front page of the url adress I want to have tiles with just letters or the name of the url adress.

  • Hmm - perhaps instead of tiles you mean "bookmarks"?
On the Speeddial page click on Bookmarks ("Speeddial" "+" "Bookmarks" )
Or try on the Menu - View - "Show Bookmarks Bar" ?

    • is that what you mean?

No. User is talking about the actual speed dial images themselves being like just a text name or an overgrown favicon, rather than an image of the page. It is possible to customize speed dials like this, but it is not really trivial, and it is not a built-in option at this moment. One can search the forum for "Customize Speed Dials" or similar, (I guess it's this one: https://vivaldi.net/forum/vivaldi-browser/2343-customize-speed-dial ) and someone (or a couple of someones) has laid out a routine whereby you can assign any image you want to a given dial, but I never read it carefully enough to know for sure if it's persistent through the update process. I think it is, because if I recall, there's something in there about making the image folder "read-only" once you are done customizing the dials.

    Have fun!

No, he wants to have thumbnails like in Opera, where the url name is displayed rather than a preview of the page.

Vivaldi does not offer such feature, you can customise the thumbs by yourself.

Heh! We answered at the same time!

  • That's correct, the url name on the speed dial tiles.
But now I know that this option is not available in Vivaldi, at the moment.

    Thanks anyway. :)

    Another question.
Is it possible to change the size of the speed diales tiles?
I think they are to big.

    Not yet…

Well actually, yes you can, but only indirectly at the moment. If you reduce the UI Scale [in Settings] whilst watching the SD tab, you can resize the SDs to your taste. HOWEVER, sadly so far the devs, whilst substantially improving Extensions support compared to "ye olde days of yore", have not yet implemented the UI Scaling ALSO on the Extension dropdown menus. Consequently, if you happen to use Extensions, you'll be exasperated [like me] with this indirect SD resizing, coz whilst you'll end up with customised SD size to your taste, the unhappy by-product is that many Extensions become actually or almost unusable [unless you keep resetting the UIS back to 100%]. I live in hope that eventually this issue will also be resolved, as many others already have been as V evolves.

Another way is changing the CSS, as in the customisation thread.

  • Hi An_dz

https://vivaldi.net/en-US/forum/all/3073-vivaldi-ui-customisations has 13+ pages. The p1 Index link wrt SD seems to relate more to images/thumbnails than sizing. I'm someone who knows nothing about coding, CSS, JS, HTML editing etc… i'm just a keen end-user. Do you happen to know if, buried somewhere within those 13+ pages, some kind soul might have already written a "cookbook recipe" for resizing the SD page, independent of the UI Scaling in Settings?

    No, no one did so.
