Vivaldi improves tabs and media playback, adds sharing of URLs with QR codes

@sjudenim Several GPU cards (as the mine) went to software mode. Maybe related?
-
Vivaldi - a browser by geniuses.

@Aronand said in Vivaldi improves tabs and media playback, adds sharing of URLs with QR codes:
@paul1149: Hi, do you have an Intel iHD driver by any chance?
Not sure what that is. I have an nvidia graphics card. It's an older Vista-era tower with hardware upgrades, converted to MX Linux x64 with the KDE desktop.
-
@Hadden89 Per vivaldi://gpu you mean? Graphics Feature Status looks OK to me here (Nvidia), with hardware acceleration indicated, but it just seems like 3.5 is slower painting windows, even internal ones like Speed Dial. I might be imagining it.
-
@rseiler yeah, my amd r7 is software only now, but for some reasons feel faster. I could even enforce the acceleration but I don't feel the need.
Unloading the gpu render could reduce the ram usage (but may increase the CPU one, which is an amd fx 8320) -
@ZigZag88 I changed the color with custom css but it doesn't look like the original. I hope they bring it back with the next update.
-
@Seymarames It won’t come back. And you can’t color it to look like the old one, because it’s a different svg with added transparency. If you still got access to an old version, open it, inspect the UI and copy the svg paths, then you can exchange the icon with a modification in the new versions. Or you embrace the change, it makes sense after all. It’s one less fixed color in our UI. I wished the other fixed colors would disappear too.
-
@luetage I think I'll stick with embracing the change. Not that bad at all, I was just shocked when I saw that but it doesn't really bother me anymore.

@guigirl:
Your confusion is understandable, because that changelog item is incorrect: "Clone tab in background" is not a new option, it's the new (and improved) behavior for whenever you clone a tab. Before this change, cloning a tab was always slightly disruptive, because you would automatically switch to the newly cloned tab, which first had to finish loading. Now the cloned tab is simply created silently in the background. Since the two tabs are identical anyway, the new behavior is unequivocally better. Hence, there is no option to return to the old behavior.
-
@NSSynapse You forgot to mention the important part though, that this works only if you have ticked "New Tab From Link Opens in Background" in the Settings, it follows that logic.
-
No way!!! Finally, you guys put the option to change the behavior of opening new tabs in background. Thank you so much, it was one of the most frustrating things because of my muscular memory
-
@mirek74 The bug, which was affecting multiple other sites as well, has been fixed in the snapshot release already. Hopefully a minor update to stable is released soon to address this.
-
"Improved Popup Thumbnails for Tab Stacks" <- A lot better now...! Great work!!
-
I think this post should be in Desktop Releases category.

@npro
You are absolutely right -- sorry for adding to the confusion while trying to reduce confusion!I had completely forgotten that I had enabled "New Tab From Link Opens in Background" to test whether it affected scenarios other than using "Open Link in New Tab" from the context menu. Since I never use "Open Link in New Tab" in the context menu, and since I haven't encountered other situations yet, in which tabs would now get opened in the background when they weren't before, I completely forgot that I had enabled that setting.
Plus, as described in my previous post, I still don't see a good reason why "Clone Tab" should not always open the cloned tab in the background, so there was probably some expectation-driven thinking at play as well.

I'm occasionally encountering issues with tiled tabs which I suspect is related to the fact that new tabs opened from tiled tabs are now also tiled. A couple of issues I've encountered, but so rarely that I don't know how to reproduce them:
- I closed one of the tiled tabs, the tab disappeared from the tab bar but the tiled area corresponding to that tab became grey instead of vanishing and having the tiling redone. I simply couldn't find a way to remove that area without untiling the tabs.
- I cloned a tiled tab, and one of the tiled areas vanished offscreen (initially tiling looked like "Tab 1 | Tab 2", I cloned tab 1 and the tiling became "Tab 1 | Tab 1" with Tab 2 vanishing offscreen and not showing up even if I clicked on it in the tab bar). Again, the only way to make Tab 2 appear back was when the tabs were untiled.

Can someone please confirm that the inbuilt ad blocking manager is working properly?
EDIT: I found the problem, it was because of these lists https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/52979/how-to-block-every-single-tiny-ads-and-youtube-ads

First though when I saw the new tabs stacks: "Omg so much better."
It really is good work, thank you. -
I used Vivaldi under Linux on a 32 "UHD Montior. Up until now the thumbnails in the Pop-Up Tab Stacks view were just big enough that the page could be recognized reasonably quickly, even if it was a Google image search with many small pictures in the thumbnail (I would have preferred even bigger then). Now you can hardly see it anymore :(. Can I get the much better old view back? O. at least enlarge the thumbnails?
Also, a horizontal view is generally much quicker to look through (at least for us horizontal readers right!?).
And what does that mean that a lot more thumbnails can now fit on the screen? Because of the size, OK, but that has nothing to do with the vertical layout. In reality you have to say that the system now has less space since it previously went from the far left of the screen to the far right and now the menu bar from the top must be deducted from the available space. And if there are more than in one line fits, they were displayed in several lines, which wasn't a big problem. Sometimes I had 5 lines full and could then look through them line by line like in "a book".

Thank you for the
Cropping the URL discards the port information (VB-72226)
fix! It was really annoying to me as a Software engineer working with local host everyday
