Solved Auto mark email as read option
-
I have to manually mark email as read, it would be nice to mark email as read on opening or after a second.
-
This was completed in the latest vivaldi 5.7 - https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-5-7-on-desktop/

Vivaldi makes a distinction between unseen mail and unread mail.
It seems what you're looking for is for email to be marked as seen automatically (that it already does).I think the rationale behind that is for the user to be able to mark as unread emails that need to be addressed later. I think the names could have been chosen differently to avoid this confusion though (like read + pending instead of unseen + read).
-
I don't think OP confuses "seen" and "read", but wants to have both immediately after opening any email disregarding the current state.
I'd second this request. It could be made an optional setting.

Hi,
Click to any mail or feed to mark it as read automatically. This is in all mail clients.
Edit: Oct 02 2021
Extended description:
*Hello,
I think the idea we having, is, if you click in any new mail or feed (when click on it or when you move with the arrow key) is to mark that mail/feed as VIEWED AND READ (in a specific time or 0secons) when the action happens. Nothing more, nothing less. Currently, we have to press K key.
This is implemented in all mails clients that I know.
Currently, I only using one account in Vivaldi because this option for me is important. All other accounts are in eMClient.
Hope the Vivaldi team can work on this soon.*

After select it, with the option to mark as read after 0 to N seconds (optional).

@cjcr This is a bit tricky for M3 (as for M2) to implement this. The Unread view is the key place to get stuff done. Emails show there while they carry the unread flag, and automatically marking them read would make them disappear while you look at the email.

This is in all mail clients.
If a good solution to the above mentioned problem is found I think M3 should introduce such a feature. But just because other clients work that way doesn't mean it's good. The workflow with M3 to keep emails unread (and in the unread view) is very efficient.
Example - with the mail client we use at work it is impossible to reply to an email without automatically marking it as read. But it is possible to show only unread email (my default).
So when I reply "I'll get back to you by the end of the week" the email is marked read, vanishes from view (I only show unread emails) and I have to go and mark it unread again. Terrible. I die small deaths every day at work because emails are automatically marked read in some way just because the freaking program is making decisions for me and I have to work around that.

for that you can use color flags or something else, i think.

one of those workarounds.
The whole concept of "mark as read after x seconds" is not making sense to me. Some emails take more time to read than others. I get interrupted while reading an email. From a purely logical point of view, a computer program cannot decide when I have read something or not.

Maybe for the workflow you use it's good for you and that's ok, but maybe others don't have this kind of workflow. In my case and I am sure that others too, we like that a mail is make as read when I click in instantly (even without wait for a second or something).
Here's an example:
The red circle says: "Mark as read after 0 seconds".
-
@cjcr I get that, but, as I said, tricky when the whole concept of Vivaldi Mail revolves around doing work in Unread. If an automated read time is set, it cannot apply to the Unread view.
-
@wildente Maybe can hide the unview thing when the option to "mark as read automatically when you click in it" option is mark. I am sure that the Vivaldi team can make happy to all of us... the idea is there.

Today Vivaldi came out with Mail (beta) for all.
And I have to say: Where can I set E-Mails marked as read after xX seconds?
So I voted up for this feature request.
For me this option as shown in post #7 is really missing. -
Same. This behaviour to not automaticly mark as read the emails clicked is sadly a deal breaker for using Vivaldi Mail instead of my classic email app
-
@skatanax Upvote the feature request. M2 had the option. I'm sure M3 can have it as well. In about 35 years on standalone email clients I have never needed/wanted the feature, but I know some people depend on it, being unable to make use of the unseen/unread distinction that M2 offered and M3 offers. So, support the feature request.
-
Yes, i want also use as in M2 the mark read after x sec, now here its uncomfortable in a way.
If there is an option like M2 everyone should be happy to use it at his own need.
-
I'm looking for this option also!
-
Ditto! Mail should be marked as read after being opened. This is default behaviour in every other mail app I've ever used.
-
Any progress on this?
-
@cjcr Two months is not long. Mail is still in beta. We might see see another Snapshot before the weekend, but we won't know what bug fixes and new features are included until we see it.
-
@maiiler Oh, yes, OPTIONAL, as I am also consufed about "seen" and "read".... I was about to ask for optional mark as "seen", believing it is marked as "read".
Well, an optional "mark as seen after XX seconds" and Well, an optional "mark as read after XX seconds" would be nice, with
XX = 0
meaning "do not mark as seen/read automatically".
