Recently i raised
Summary: "clear data on exit" does NOT clear cache & history.
Key: VAB-2783
Project: Vivaldi Android BrowserOvernight i received this email:
Hi,
Thanks for reporting this issue.
We've just released a new snapshot build with some improvements in the clear data on exit feature. Please upgrade to the latest version and check if your problem still exist.
Thank you for your time and using Vivaldi!
Best wishes,

Team VivaldiI have tested the new version quite a lot, & feel confused about my observations:
- I access the Android 6
Settings - Storage & USB - Internal storage - Apps - Vivaldi Snapshot
, & manually pressClear Cache
, which duly clears, reverting to some kB. - After a browsing session, comprising standard not private tabs, & including visits to maybe 6 - 8 sites, i exit the browser via the V Menu dropdown menu option.
- i return to #1 location.
- Unhappily i see now that the cache certainly was NOT cleared, given it's now ~20 MB. At this point i do NOT manually reclear it.
- I relaunch V-SS, & from the V Menu dropdown menu option i pick
Recent tabs
. I see there are NONE, includingFull History
. That is, the new Snapshot did indeed remove my tabs upon close, as desired. But what of the cache? - i return to #1 location. This time, almost instantly, the cache reduces from those ~20 MB, to a small number of kB, ergo, now the cache is cleared.
- I repeat this whole sequence over & over, always getting the same behaviour.
It appears as if it is not the act of closing V that initiates the data deletion process, but only the next V launch that then triggers this delayed clearing.
If so, i am not happy with this, because it means that for however many hours or days between my V usage sessions, my history etc is actively retained in cache, which apart from potential privacy implications, implies that my Android system & any other apps i might use in that time, are denied that proportion of the total storage. For all you owners of newer better phones with later Android, pls understand that i know from bitter experience on this phone that unless i maximise its free space, it rapidly slows down to a miserable crawl.

@Steffie I have found there is a process to clear everything and even though it works sometimes a new version may cause the process not to work.
The Process:
- When exiting V, all tabs Must be Closed
- If you use the separate search bar, as I do, it also must be cleared
- Then you can hit Shft + Ctrl + Del (or use the menu Alt+ T+D to get to the Delete Browsing Data dialog and then hit D(elete).
It Usually works for me but if I have left any tabs open or there is something in the Search Field... well it may not.
Other times I find despite my process, it has not worked, especially with the Cache folder.
FF had the same behaviour last I tested it a year or so ago. Even if in the Options you chose to delete browsing history on exit, if a tab was open when you exited FF, it was there when you reopened it (even if set it to open on a blank page).
[EDIT] I am on theSnapshot in Win10 and Stable on Linux (PCLOS) -
@greybeard Um... wrong thread. This is Android.
-
@BehemothXxx I don't mind if its optional. Personally I am fine without it.
-
@Steffie Doh! Slap Forehead!
There it is staring me right in the face. Android Browser and I missed it.
Going to bed.

Please! I actually like it a lot in that position.
I use it frequently enough for it to deserve a spot in the toolbar! :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_cold_sweat:

@Stardust You have to constantly double-click to return to the home page! It is very inconvenient and time consuming. It's sad if Vivaldi turns into Google Chrome and cannot decide on the design
-
@BehemothXxx My browsing experience wasn't affected that much. Well, I am also using Firefox and it has a very similar address bar layout.
BTW how do you think about an idea to open start page by swiping on the address bar?

Someone please give this friend a medal.

@TheQuantumAlpha here is a Feature Request if you are interested

-
@Stardust To begin with, I would really like to be able to edit the icons on the panel. I think it's obvious that many people want it, but unfortunately only the Samsung browser has it. Vivaldi is in no hurry to do it yet.

like reorder them, add or remove? Is there a Feature Request already?

I dont know. But I thought it was a long time since someone welcomed it. The main thing is comfortable control in the browser and I think it needs more attention.
-
@behemothxxx: Not able to reproduce that here, could you log a bug?
-
@Aronand
No mistake! I want to bring back the homepage icon! I do not understand why they removed it. It is necessary to make either the ability to edit the icons or not touch anything at all so as not to spoil -
@behemothxxx: Oh, I misread you, I was thinking of the speed dial, nvm me The designers have to work to find a balance between too many buttons and functionality, but I'm sure they will take any feedback into account on this
