Still same crash on Linux (VB-71985), still unable to download debug snapshot build.
I'm unable to download debug binaries for Linux snapshot builds. Following instructions on https://help.vivaldi.com/article/reporting-crashes-on-linux/, I'm trying to download this file for the snapshot here https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/desktop/custom-links-in-menus-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-2059-2/:
wget https://vivaldi.com/download/vivaldi-3.4.2059.2-1.x86_64-debug.zip --2020-10-02 07:32:38-- https://vivaldi.com/download/vivaldi-3.4.2059.2-1.x86_64-debug.zip Resolving vivaldi.com (vivaldi.com)... 172.67.21.222, 104.22.68.109, 104.22.69.109, ... It is not the first time, I've failed to do so for every last snapshot we had, see my posts at https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/51173/periodic-tab-reload-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-2056-19/142?lang=en-US&page=8
Come on, could anyone at Vivaldi support team check if the Linux snapshots debug builds are published and the instructions for crash reporting are still valid? Here is a user that wants help you, but you don't give me a chance!

@Steffie Nope, nope, nope.
Meine Emojis bleiben gebrochen, d.h. einfarbig und missgebildet.
This is me, giving up on it, again... & pretending i don't care, again.
Spoiler
- I installed
noto-fonts-emoji
from the main Arch repos. - I created
/etc/fonts/local.conf
with contents per @luetage at https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/402429 - I relaunched V-SS & confirmed that the V Menu
Tools - Internal Tools - ⛔ RESTART ⛔
still only displays as malformed monochrome re the emojis. - I closed everything, logged out then logged back into my Plasma desktop.
- Repeated #3 - still NFG.
- Rebooted.
- Repeated #3 - still NFG.
- Searched my Bookmarks & rediscovered this old reference https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/tutorial-how-to-enable-system-wide-color-emoji-support/35188
- i diffed that url's
/etc/fonts/local.conf
against that per #2, noted multiple differences, decided to retain #2. - Noted that url's "Go to your settings or configuration tool and change the font to "Sans Serif". This will use the configuration we've just created so apps can show emoji." & rejected it -- as previously stated, i simply will not change my prefered default fonts merely to use some lousy emojis.
- Noted that url's later post/reply https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/tutorial-how-to-enable-system-wide-color-emoji-support/35188/3, & so copied my
/etc/fonts/local.conf
to/home/steffie/.config/fontconfig/local.conf
[knowing this is not what that reference had said]. - I closed everything, logged out then logged back into my Plasma desktop.
- Repeated #3 - still NFG.
- Contemplated following https://archived.forum.manjaro.org/t/tutorial-how-to-enable-system-wide-color-emoji-support/35188/3 to the letter, ie, replacing the contents of
/home/steffie/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
with/etc/fonts/local.conf
, felt this was likely unwise [ie, maybe a similar feeling to @potmeklecbohdan per https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/402417 ?]. - Contemplated maybe replacing either
/etc/fonts/local.conf
or/home/steffie/.config/fontconfig/local.conf
with contents of https://gist.github.com/Nyubis/2023a01276c1cfc9786a per @potmeklecbohdan at https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/402381, noted however that it seems entirely predicated on using my disliked font familyNoto
, so didn't bother. - Decided to abandon this foolish quest once again.
- Commenced a period of intensive sulking; duration indeterminate.
Stupid emojis.
- I installed

Noto Sans
&Noto Serif
to your preferred font?Nevertheless, IIRC, this (the config behind the link) is what I tried & failed.

Snicker.
Still working hard on #17 here.
-
@Gwen-Dragon : thanks, finally!
Please update instructions at https://help.vivaldi.com/article/reporting-crashes-on-linux/ : the url is not
wget https://vivaldi.com/download/vivaldi-<version>.<arch>-debug.zip
but
wget https://vivaldi.com/download/files/snapshot/vivaldi-<version>-<arch>-debug.zip

…but now I succeeded, with none of the fonts being
Noto {Sans|Serif|Mono}

What does this mean? Are you saying that now, despite your attempts originally not working, you do now indeed see emojis in your V-SS Menu?
Specifically which file [including path] did you edit pls?
-
@Steffie I’d stick to my instructions, but that’s only natural, because it works here, lol. I remember darkly that I had to reload font cache after adding
local.conf
. -

In this build I can't edit notes using the floating note panel. As I set my cursor in the note the panel "floats out".
Don't know if the problem was also present in the last ones. -
@AndreyL There is no need to update the instructions https://vivaldi.com/download/vivaldi-3.4.2059.2-x86_64-debug.zip works fine. There is a redirect but it works. The initial problem is simply that they were not uploaded for the last snapshot.

I’d stick to my instructions
Ta. Unless you can spot a divergence i made in my documented steps 1 - 7 above, then afaik i did follow your method. Re this beeswax of "reload font cache", well obviously this is the first time i have heard of this, ergo i did not manually do it before... but surely my documented logout/in AND reboot served this purpose? Yet, it did not work for me.
@potmeklecbohdan said in Custom links in menus – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2059.2:
I edited ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
Oh, so you mean this:
@potmeklecbohdan said in Custom links in menus – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2059.2:
\2. (Doesn’t seem right to me, and is equal to uninstalling the other emoji fonts)
In ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf:But holy cow, your version now only has 9 lines, whereas my one [the default one, not edited] has 83 lines. There's no way i am willing to do that; logically it must imply possibly substantial unintended consequences to make a change so large, merely for these lousy emojis.
Thanks anyway.

In ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf:Errr… no. I copy-pasted the relevant part of what’s behind the MF link you’ve posted into
~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
(then changed the Gtk settings, refreshed font cache & checked whether it works). But holy cow, your version now only has 9 lines, whereas my one [the default one, not edited] has 83 lines.
The version I’ve posted is only the relevant part of the file, in its completeness it has 61 lines (I hoped that the in before the file name, together with the fact there was 2-space indentation, would be enough sign that it isn’t the complete file).

@potmeklecbohdan Thanks, but don't worry any more - i have given up.

Looking on the stack, probably chromium doesn't like my vncviewer.

Very first iteraction (I use v-button, mods and single menu on main snapshot) :3
I'm not allowed to attach *.apng so I opted for a classic *.gif
The first Emoji should probably go where the standard icons are, but I'm unsure if it is a chromium menu limitation.
-
@Steffie Well, we don’t use the same operating system. That’s the whole problem with Linux, no target. It’s the reason why software developers tend not to bother with it in the first place. We could of course argue it’s a strength, but it’s the main reason why the market share is and will remain low on the desktop. Crucify me, but I wished the fragmented ecosystem would just decide for one distribution, desktop environment and window manager and release one main GNU/Linux operating system and live happily ever after. I tell you, if that'd be the case you would have working color emojis right now
-
@luetage Well, for this kind of people there’re Windows, macOS & Chrome OS… I have no idea how complex such things would have to be to satisfy everyone.
