Bookmarks issues
-
I'm experiencing some issues related to Bookmarks. The first range of issues is related to clicking bookmarks with left mouse button (LMB), middle mouse button MMB)or right mouse button (RMB). In a regular web page, LMB-click a link and the page is opened in the current tab, MMB-click opens a new background tab and RMB-click pops up a menu. The same counts for all my bookmarks in the Bookmarks panel. The same counts for level 1 bookmarks on the bookmarks bar. But my bookmarks bar also contains folders and subfolders, and in there life is somewhat different. The LMB-click opens in the current tab, the MMB-click does nothing and the RMB-click also opens the current tab. Another issue is related to Xmarks bookmark synchronisation across different browsers: Google Chrome, IE, and Firefox. Following this discussion thread I managed to get my bookmarks in a compatible structure. But somehow, somewhere my bookmarks folder structure is being messed up where my bookmarks bar will be filled with a large range of folders that really should have been placed one hierarchy deeper. Until now, the only way to solve things is to perform a Xmarks restore to a previous bookmarks set, and this several times a day on several browsers. Maybe something more needs to be done to make my bookmarks structure more compatible across browsers, or something is actually messing things up? I would like to understand where Vivaldi stores its bookmarks so that I can try and watch what may be happening, and would it help if I'd make that available to the development team for review or experimentation? I may have found the answer to the second issue where the Xmarks bookmarks synchronisation goes wrong.
After writing down above problem description, I decided to examine the bookmarks structures in V, FF, GC and IE more closely. I found that the favourites in IE (also synced through Xmarks) contained a subfolder "Bookmarks bar" within "Bookmarks bar". In other words, one of my Bookmarks folders had received a reserved name. After renaming this subfolder in IE, I haven't experienced any messing up of my Bookmarks anymore. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.Xmarks cross browser tip: Considering different bookmarks structures and requirements across browsers, for each different browser that you use, check the synchronisation results for possible errors and inconsistencies, and try to find a common solution.
