It acts more interestingly if I also press
Ctrl+X
(but it does not put the imaginary text in the clipboard)
Ctrl+Z
does not work either. -
It seems that input cache buffer is cleared before any tab content is displayed, so all characters you previously typed are lost.
To verify just open any search engine in a new tab and type something: all characters you typed before search field became visible are lost.

I cannot execute this in the time available - I prefer my example with the incognito window.
